I never found a lot of value in SI.
It was always a "slick" magazine with GREAT photographs, but I never really thought much of their content. I was much more of a "Sporting News" guy. I've always been more into box scores and stat sheets than photos and commentary.
That said, I still believe that browsing baseball and football box scores in a daily newspaper was WAY better than checking box scores on the internet.
Nowadays, there's a LOT more information available to you sooner than it used to be, but YOU have to actively go look for it, so there's much less about sports or TV shows that gives us as humans a way to connect.
Remember when there were "water cooler" TV shows to talk about? That was like 3 years ago. Now, you never know who has watched up to episode 4 of the latest "hot" show, because it's all available immediately (or later on-demand) to everybody.

There has been some amazing sportswriting in SI througout the years. I mean sportswriting that really illustrated what happened in a particular game or event. Sure some of it is too literate or wordy for mass audiences, especially these days.

Agree, great writers and off the wall 'sports' and human interest stuff. Their actual 'expertise' in the real world was/ is questionable.

Sporting News used to be A+. It is no where near what it used to be. Print media is dying a slow, ugly death. Just the way it is. Just like 90% of the job skills I was proud of and well compensated for are absolutely obsolete and useless now.

Frank DeFord's SI article on the Beavers in the 2006 College World Series was amongst the best sports stories I have ever read.

My favorite was the short article by Rick Reilly about John Wooden. He certainly adored his wife Nellie! Print media is done for, and many of the sports covered by print media probably not that far behind. I hear video gaming leagues are big deals now.....I wouldn't know - I stare at screens all day long for my livelihood, the last thing I want to do in my downtime is stare at them.
