Katie McWilliams and Mikayla Pivec served as co-captains for the Beavs last season. Assuming Pivec is again selected for a co-captain role, do the Beavs also go with both Slocum and Goodman to ensure that at least one co-captain returns for the '20-'21 season? We hope to have Slocum in the line-up for two more seasons, but a strong junior campaign for Slocum could move her up even higher on the WNBA Draft boards.
There are a number of leaders on this year's squad. Some lead in quieter ways. Some of the leaders are very expressive. Maddie Washington is outwardly as supportive and vocal a leader as the Beavs have. Kat Tudor can be a fiery leader.
I think that the Beavs may have had tri-captains with Wiese, Hanson, and Gulich in '16-'17 when the program won its third consecutive PAC-12 regular season title. Gulich and McWiliams were co-captains in '17-'18. There seems to be a program practice of having at least one junior serve as a captain so that the leadership continuity is in place for the following season.
Regardless of which players formally serve as captains for '19-'20, one thing that is certain to continue is the clear togetherness that is apparent on the court and the bench when the team is competing. That is a constant and continuing expectation for Scott Rueck-coached teams. You rarely will see a player on the bench who is not fully engaged with what is taking place on the court, regardless of how close the game score is.
