"Oregon State hoped to give Tinkle a raise that is "really competitive" with other schools in the Pac-12."
So it must be light years away from the salary proposed to St. Mary's Randy Bennett back in 2008.

Interesting he interviewed for Stanford job. Oh well. Leverage is leverage. I'm glad he's a Beaver!

Interesting he interviewed for Stanford job. Oh well. Leverage is leverage. I'm glad he's a Beaver! Does it really matter if he spoke with Stanford? It's a good economic decision on his part especially if he wanted an early extension. After all, 35-26 his first two seasons and a trip to the big dance. It was reasonable for him to say to OSU "You want me or not?"

I find lots of evidence on line he's taken OSU to the NCAA tourney for the first time in ages, can't find any so far that he spoke with Stanford. We've got a new AD, and possibly a slightly different way of thinking, perhaps he made the decision without "caving" to leverage. There are probably some out there who'd like to know how it played out rather than rely on a unsubstantiated message board claim? I'm glad he's on board for a couple more years. Hopefully it was a competitive raise.

There had already been ongoing contract talks throughout the season (with both Rueck and Tinkle). The Stanford opening wasn't the impetus of such. From March 22: I interpret that to mean that OSU has been working on extensions for the two of them all season, not that other people have been trying to snatch them up during the season. If I'm not mistaken, going after a guy while he's in the middle of a season is a pretty big breach of etiquette in the coaching world. Usually those things are done after the season ends.

Hopefully it was a competitive raise. Ha yeah. I can't even find an internet rumor about Stanford talking to Tinkle. that is the kind of thing that if there was ANY weight other than an AD contacting an agent to gauge interest, it would be reported somewhere. But i guess it doesn't matter. OSU needs to learn it can be a destination spot. it can be a big boy. and it needs to not fear other schools coming knocking... and it needs to learn the price of keeping up with the Joneses. I expect to see very quickly Tinkles base to be in the $1.5-$2M a year range by the end of this week. Lets not forget. Tinkle taking OSU to the Tournament earns OSU somewhere around $1.6M for its appearance. If Tinkle builds this team to a yearly NCAA appearing team... then he has paid his own salary every year with a single game appearance. EDIT: I was a bit off. Each round a TEAM plays earns about $1.67M for the CONFERENCE. so 7 teams earned a minimum of $1.67M. in total, the PAC-12 earn 11 "units". (7 first round games, 2 second round, 1 sweet 16, 1 elite 8.) so each team earns about $1.53M this year. EDIT2: it is now in the paper this morning that Tinkle did interview with the AD at Stanford, but fairly quickly pulled his name from consideration. Most likely leverage as we all assume. Still not that big of a deal.
