Article is kind of incomplete - Why not cleared ? Medically ? Until When, or is this a forever deal ?
She has such a great attitude and promising skills. Hope she gets in a position to follow her dreams.

Yeah, its kind of really unfortunate. I mean with everything the kid has been through, and her whole exodus to the US -- just breaks my heart. Hoping we will get to see Andrea some day...

Doesn't look like Rueck offered any additional details to Daschel either

I think we should just admit to ourselves that she will never play for OSU, and move on. We would all love to see her get to play, but after this long I would think the odds are about 90-10 that she will never touch the floor, sucks. She is a great teammate and loves being here, but that is going to be it, imo. She keeps the scholly I think, but can we get compensated for the loss of the scholly by the NCAA?? OR, will they play games with us, again?

Not an expert but found this in regard to scholarships and medical retirements.
A Medical Exemption is also beneficial for college programs, as they do not count towards their total scholarship limit.

I agree with those sentiments wholeheartedly. Andrea has significant skills and rare height. One player shared with me that Andrea would have helped the team last season if she had been cleared to play. Her teammates love her. She is a very likable person.

I agree that it's a shame, and also agree that it's time to move on. Best to assume that she's never going to play for OSU, but life goes on - for her, hopefully, very happily.

It is really too bad for her I have been looking forward to seeing her play. What kind of heart condition for a 20 year old cannot be addressed by either therapy, medication, or surgery?

May be, if it is surgery ( worst case ), that even with a successful outcome - she is not able to play competitive sports without significant risk. Key thing is that she extends and improved her quality of life.

I'd give it a shot....

Back in August, I wondered why the OSU Athletic Dept. could not/ would not state publically if Aquino had been cleared to play this year or not. I was duly informed it was most likely a HIPAA issue. I'm very familiar with HIPAA, and cannot see how a simple yes, she is cleared, or a no, she is not cleared could be a violation. Now that Coach Rueck has confirmed AA is not cleared, should we now be concerned of a HIPAA violation? Inquiring minds..

Every time I go to AA's twitter page, I see a pinned tweet of AA slam dunking the basketball, and I think what could of been and how our team would be elevated into sure fire National Championship contention and and and..... For at the end of the day, I am a OSU WBB fan, and the success of our team is a very pleasant element of my fandom. So that video, coupled with the recent news, is disappointing to me.
And then I think of a young lady who grew up in impoverished circumstances in Paraguay, I think of her making her way here, having to deal with high school level "coaches" and handlers who were willing to exploit her (aside - I hope they weren't aware of her issue, especially if it was/is potentially life-threatening) and put their own selfish interests at heart. AA is someone who could really be despairing her circumstances.......and I cheer myself up by reminding myself that AA has landed among a true family with very high integrity coaches, and that her sisterhood might just be able to carry her through this trying circumstance.
If there is really justice in the world, AA *will* throw down at Gill, and a sellout crowd, hopefully including me, will cheer her mightily, and cheer her mightily on the NCAA, WNBA and world stage. But the world is not a perfect place, and instead she might have to rely on her education, her resilience, and her support system to cope with the tragedy of one of her gifts and talents being denied her ability to use it and share it.
At this point, we should celebrate her presence at OSU, where she can learn and grow among a family, just like she celebrates on the bench by being (from my vantage point) the best possible teammate. Its our good fortune and hers that she is here. Isn't that enough?
Note that I am not trying to be preachy, I am just trying to cope with my own WBB-level disappointment by reminding myself that the issue is bigger than this one fan, and more about a young lady's life......
Go Beavers!
