Syd had a nice game. Some good D, nice passes, 3-5 behind the arc. It was close most of the way but LA blew the game wide open in the 4th quarter.
So glad to see Wiese find a niche and become a valuable player for LA this year. After the 2018 season it seemed like she would soon be out of the league.

So glad to see Wiese find a niche and become a valuable player for LA this year. After the 2018 season it seemed like she would soon be out of the league. This article was a really nice view into Syd's evolution in the WNBA. I loved this quote by her coach Fisher that hints at our culture: “She and I talked before the season about finding a way to get her back in touch with the Oregon State Sydney, the confidence, the swagger, the belief that she can play against anybody and do it with some flair and some style. I think she’s been able to do so,” Fisher said. “She cares about doing everything the right way, she comes in early, she stays late. A lot of that started for her in the offseason. To me, when she got back from overseas, she took herself through a very heaving training regimen.” Go Beavers!

The main thing that kept Syd in the league, was that Fisher really liked her. Who makes a WNBA roster, is not always dependant on what players do between the lines. A lot has to do one reputation. There are a lot of players not in the league who are much better than some who have been in the league for years. A degree of luck is always a factor. First, you have to get on a team that has a need a player supplies. Then they have to have the opportunity to be able to showcase their talent during the almost non-existent training camp and preseason. Every player has good and bad days. If training camp happens to hit one of your bad weeks you are out very quickly. Even if you have a good training camp that does not always guarantee you a spot. Coaches tend to go with lesser vets than unproven rookies. The major problem is that once you get cut that reputation sticks with you and you are seen as a training camp body.
Syd was fortunate that Fisher liked her because her production last season would have ordinarily have labeled her a camp body who would have had to have had an excellent training camp. The numbers also worked in her favor because the Sparks were also very thin at the guard positions, having traded way Sims with Gray still overseas. It gave her the opportunity to play major minutes at the point and she made good use of that opportunity into a starting spot at the two once Gray returned. Right now she is the back up at both guard positions and the choice when defense is needed over offense. I think this season has cemented her in position as a WNBA vet and that is a major leap.

Another solid game for Syd. 3 point shot wasn't there but she scored 8 points, had a few assists and rebounds. The two starting guards for LA were AWFUL, they stunk up the floor. Back and forth game got away from the Sparks in the 4th quarter.
