Yesterday we had huge thunderstorms roll through Central Oregon. Complete with pouring down rain that was probably half our annual rainfall. Overwhelmed storm drains. Standing water on parkway. 25 mph was more than fast enough. Had one big boom. Big flash and about a tenth of a second or so later the BOOM. With speed of sound I figure it hit about 100-200 feet away. Looked out in the desert through the downpour at the stand of pine/juniper trees to see if anything was burning. Probably just hit the ground. Spectacular day in Bend. Storms started mid-morning and lasted until early evening. Out on the deck in the evening just smelling the wet sagebrush. Heavy rains pretty much saved the day.

I was driving just north of Dever, heading south toward Denver, during a thunderstorm in mid-June one day ~35 years ago. I just happened to look to my right to the mountains when I saw a lightning bolt hit the rocks about 100 yards away or so. There was a huge explosive noise, with almost a high-pitched whine to it, and then my car shook (small Toyota Corolla) like it had been hit with a giant hammer.
It's the only time in my life that I have ever seen a lightning bolt hit the ground and it was definitely one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I love a good thunderstorm!

i was living near Council Crest in portland about 20 years ago. thought i heard some thunder activity but i wasnt sure so i stepped outside a couple steps outside with my 1 year old just to see. All of a sudden a bolt hit a tree up in the park and it was so freaking loud my kid peed on me. It wasnt just the volume it was the vibration of the air. Even Louder than the Judas Priest concert in Eugene that blew out their speakers and caused them to have to give refunds. That tree survived to today but it looks like crap.
