Further to that, here's last year's RPI for this year's opponents: UC IRVINE 171 So. Utah 272 Miami 19 Liberty 180 Hawaii 185 Utah St. 181 No. Ariz. 222 BYU 26 CSU Baker. 276 Fortunately, OSU plays in the PAC-12, where UO, Stanford, UCLA, and ASU play. If OSU takes care of business in the PAC-12, RPI will be in good shape by end of regular season. I believe they've been in the Pac12 for a while!? That's the point... Pac12 schedule alone hasn't been enough. And, even more so when you might start out in the Top 10 and need to keep that status/respect going thru a tough Pac12. The non-conference means a ton come to seeding... a "tie breaker" of sorts. A low tier out-of-conference losses OSU cred when being considered to other similar P5 teams.

Not buying "the Pac 12 is tough enough, don't need to schedule well OOC." Stanford and Oregon both have WAY better non-con schedules than OSU does. If Stanford and UO take care of business in the OOC schedule, and OSU takes care of Stanford and Oregon in the PAC-12 conference, then OSU can improve it's RPI. Admittingly, that is a lot of "Ifs".

Somebody pointed out earlier in the thread, they did take care of business in 2017-18 and were rewarded w/ a 6 seed and sent on the road to Knoxville. They had no quality OOC wins that year. Relying only on conference schedule will probably not yield a best case scenario. Anyway I would think OSU wants to stand beside anyone else in the conference in challenging themselves with a tough schedule.

It really isn't the lack of Top-50's - we get plenty of those in conference. It's the 200+ schools that drag down the RPI. In a nutshell, the RPI treats beating #1 and #300 as being roughly as difficult as beating #150 and #151. So the trick to getting a good RPI isn't playing #1, it's NOT playing #300.

bvrbooster - - here's where 411500 came from. On BeaverBlitz I go by 4115bb. When I signed up for Benny's they would not accept that user name, so I modified it to 411500. Kinda awkward, I know, but it was the easiest thing to do at the moment I was trying to join this forum..... GO BEAVS !! You can edit your display name to what ever you want, for example 4115bb. Here's the steps: Profile Edit Profile Personal Edit Display Name Type what you want in the box Save The username doesn't change, but people will see the new display name.

In a nutshell, the RPI treats beating #1 and #300 as being roughly as difficult as beating #150 and #151. So the trick to getting a good RPI isn't playing #1, it's NOT playing #300. That is one of the major problems with RPI. The other one is that point spread is never taken into account. For example a team that barely beats # 150 and 151 will have a better RPI than a team that loses to the #1 by 1pt in overtime and beats #300 by 75 pts playing their reserves most of the game. Or say team one loses to team #25 by 40pts and barely beats # 50 by 1pt. A different team also loses to #25 by 1 pt in overtime and beats team # 50 by 40pts. They are considered equal in respect to RPI. One can see where this system is not really fair or valid. Therefore as bennyskid stated, who you play can have a major impact on you final RPI. You want to avoid the very low ranked teams as much as possible. For a top ten team like Oregon St. beating a team rated between ,100 and 150 RPI, would still be an easy win. So why ever play a team lower than #200 RPI at all? The only difference is that you might beat the lower team by a far greater margin, but that would neither count nor show up in the RPI rating. Of course people in hell want ice water, so we can not always get what we want. But at least an effort should be made in that regard. The only plus is that perception often counts more than reality. Except for starting last season, the Pac 12 has always been underrated. The selection committee would often make a downward adjustment to the teams in the Pac 12's RPI ratings. This is why Arizona did not make the NCAA's and the Pac 12 was under represented in respect to the conferences actual strength. It takes a while for perception, once established, to change to reflect the actual reality. It now appears that the Pac 12 is being accepted as the strongest conference in WCBB. Although there is a guy on the Louisville site who believes that the Pac 12 is the weakest conference in WCBB.

Although there is a guy on the Louisville site who believes that the Pac 12 is the weakest conference in WCBB. I'm not gonna search it out, but that's quite a stance to take. I can understand arguing about whether ACC or Pac 12 is best. Even SEC sneaking into the conversation. But don't see how anyone w/ a brain can think the Big 12 is better (sucks outside of Baylor) and the Big 10, again, not even the slightest basis to try to make that argument.

In the last 4 years, PAC 12 schools are 23-1 in first round tournament games, and 18-5 in second round games. No other conference can match that. We've had 5 different schools make the elite eight, and 4 different schools make the final four. Don't think any other conference could claim that either.
I think if they ever did set up one of those challenge things with any other conference, the PAC 12 would win at least 8 of the 12 games.
