I am very impressed with Taylor Jones. Though her stats were modest today, two things stood out: 1) her ability to get out on the perimeter to play defense, and 2) those long arms enabled her to be very disruptive. I don't know how good Jelena will end up being, but I could see Taylor being our starting center. Trish has really not shown much so far. Agreed. Another thing she does a really great job of is keeping the ball high. Of course, she is a freshman, so she still needs to get stronger and develop her offensive game more, but I think she is at a really good place for an incoming freshman. I thought Kennedy was a lot better offensively today. She finished through contact and knocked down a lot of her post moves. Her moves are still a little awkward at times, but Rueck has a ton to work with there. She hasn't shot it well from deep, still 0-7. Yeah, Trish hasn't shown a whole lot yet. I think we'll get more from her than last year, but I'm still not sure she is ready to be a Pac-12 starting center. I hate that we aren't getting to see Jelena play! I was really looking forward to seeing what she could do at center, but we'll have to wait until season starts. She sure is BIG.

I'm sure most of you have caught this, the box scores are really helpful, but they are not totally accurate. I really appreciate whoever is putting the box scores together, but don't take the numbers to the bank! The biggest problem has been with rebounds, as often the OR plus DR don't equal the total rebounds. Overall though, it does give us a good idea of how the game went for each player. For me, I'm not really surprised with how well Taylor and Kennedy have played, but I am pleased with the stats Jasmine has put up in all three games....scoring, 3tprs, rebounds, and assist.

Yeah, Jasmine has been playing really, really well. I’m not sure we’ve really had a player like her in recent years at OSU. She is a true stat-stuffer as well as a tremendous athlete. She also gets out in transition well. If her play against this level can translate to the Pac-12, we will be extremely deep at the guard positions with Kat, Mik, Destiny, Aleah, and Jasmine. I think she had a big adjustment period as far as the competition and the style of play here at OSU, but she is very talented. She is looking extremely confident out there!

I was going to write a few general comments about the game today, but after reading this thread there is not a lot of reason to do so because my observations overlap considerably with what others have written...
So, I'll throw in my thoughts anyway, even though they may sound somewhat second hand...
First point: Taylor Jones looks better than I thought she would. She's long, she moves her body efficiently, she keeps the ball high. The things you look for in a Big. On defence she deflects passes, gets her arms into passing lanes. I have no idea whether she has a shot, but right now I'd say she has a very bright future. When she is on the court she passes the eye test better than Morris.
Second point: Kennedy Brown has that lengthy, prowling look about her. She has good hands and she responds to the ball wherever it is. She hasn't found her shot yet but it looks to me like she will. We all knew Coach had two good ones in Brown & Jones but I have the feeling they are actually going to be better than advertised.
Third point: Jas Simmons looks smoother this year, and she attacks more efficiently on the dribble...She runs the court faster than any of her teammates; her dribble speed is not as fast as Slocum's but if she gets it she will be an impressive threat....I have no idea if she can shoot when it counts, but we'll all have a sense of that by January...
Fourth point: For the second game in a row the Beaver press really hurt their opponent. I haven't seen any comments from Rueck, but I expect he'll say that the defence made a lot of points for them today because it did...Basically, the Italian team today flat wore out. The Beavs really did not get a whole lot of points from their offensive sets - but they didn't need to.
Fifth point: fun game with lots of promise shown by Brown, Jones and Simmons....
Sixth point: Pivek stole the show without doing anything flashy or splashy. We're so used to her excellence that we just take it for granted. Business as usual. But she is the star of this team, and with Slocum makes a great 1-2 punch for the Beavs. GO BEAVS !!

Something doesn't add up in Janessa's stats. She went 3-6 for 1 point and 6 assists.
I think Mik is averaging about four steals per game. I like that. Is she just getting better at anticipating passes?

I'll add that no one should write off Trish yet. I think Rueck is playing the freshman a lot on this trip to get them integrated into the team as quickly as possible--yes, because they are going to contribute this season! Trish is going to see PT, but probably not till the pre-season. Taylor Jones long arms remind me of Lauren Cox (Baylor). Taylor is going to play because she is going to be terrific defensively (including defensive rebounding). Taylor also got some o-boards and put backs. One thing I'll say about Kennedy Brown is the kid is a solid free throw shooter, like she has lots of game experience at the line. Really impressive.

I was very unimpressed with Maddie, looks slow, and is passing up open looks. Maddie doesn't look in game shape like her teammates. These frosh are already more advanced than Trish. The frosh are better in every way, especially athletically with the ability to move their feet and defend. Trish may develop, but she's about 5-6 deep to see much time as there are multiple young women that can man the 4/5. While Trish lacks that versatility. Last year and so far this season she looks out of place on a elite D1 roster.

baseba1111.....Think you've gone a little too far on this one...
I agree with you that the frosh are better athletically and have better overall skills than Morris... Morris is a bit slow and sometimes looks like she is wearing boots instead of runners. BUT, she is 6'7" with OK hands and that is a big deal in WBB. She can shoot the ball in close without bringing it down to her chest, and she is, eventually, going to be a good rebounder.
She might LOOK out of place, but her game is not out of place. Rueck knows she is a player who will pay solid dividends by February of this season and ALL of the following two seasons....Right now she is our only post player with height, and she is the only player who can be assigned to an opposing Big who plays primarily in the paint... When Mitrovic shows what she brings to the table Morris might be replaced as our paint Big. Right now, however, she is it.
That's how I see it....She's a keeper, and she will be a difference maker in more than one game this season...She might look out of place, but she isn't. GO BEAVS !!

I will make an observation that I haven't seen here yet (perhaps because it isn't true :-)). Even accounting for the highlights being sped up to compress more of them into the short attention span of today's internet denizen, it appears that the Beavers are attempting to play faster and finish quicker. To me it seems like there is less holding on to the ball and thinking, and more movement. I need to go watch the FB video in its entirety.....I also think it is linked to Jazz getting more comfortable (one of our potentially 'fastest' players), but it feels like a bit of a theme over 3 games..... I also think this trip will be looked back upon as "perfect timing" - Kennedy and Taylor appear to be capable of living up to their billing, and this trip will help them hit the ground running. And getting all of the other players remembering how to best play with each other (several of our stars have been off logging minutes with other teams) and the newbies who might actually log significant, even starter, minutes. We will be in better shape to round into Pac-12 fighting form early. If there is anything negative I can say, the box scores make it appear like there is a tiny bit of distracted FT shooting going on, like the players are in non-counting summer blowouts while vacationing in Italy or something. Modulo Kennedy - whom I agree, we are not seeing the whole product there yet. I am waiting for her hungry attitude + her physical tools + OSU coaching to all land, and I suspect a pleasant surprise will emerge sooner rather than later thanks to this trip with her as well. So far my nominee for "player making Kolbie leap" would be Jazz Simmons. I thought we would need it to be Morris, but seeing Taylor's work out there coupled with Jelena's size (and the fact she is biking) gives me hope for the 5 spot even if Morris isn't making a huge jump this year. A little concerned about lack of scoring punch from Taya/MW/JT, but no idea how many minutes they are getting. I think we are going to see a "changing of the guard" (or at least change in how minutes are distributed) at a couple of positions [involving Jazz, TJ and KB] during the season, which I don't think is an unreasonable expectation if you have McD AA or World champ international types driving the change. So far we have seen how SR gets to the Sweet-16 routinely (and beyond) with teams comprised of stars and good players - I am eager to see what happens when he has "really good" to superstar players at *every* position......especially ones that like each other. We might be getting closer to that scenario this year depending on how some folks progress. Go Beavers!

The 5 spot is, I think, our biggest question mark, and will remain so for the next few months. While I haven't seen any of these games, it would seem from just looking at the stats that playing time is going to have to be found for Jones and Brown; they're going to be too good to just leave on the bench. That time is going to come at somebody's expense, and one of those somebody's is going to be Morris.
It is extremely encouraging to see Simmons contributing big time on this trip. After all the hype on this board prior to last year, I was very disappointed with what I saw in her freshman campaign, to the point that I was starting to wonder if she was going to be a bust. If she can keep this up, however, she can get a whole bunch of playing time, especially until Kat is 100%. Hopefully, she'll progress so much this year that we won't be wondering how on earth we're going to replace Pivec. (Well, that's not true; Pivec is far and away our best player, and we are definitely going to wonder how we're going to replace her - but we will.)

I wouldn’t say she is far and away our best player. Destiny is pretty darn good herself. She spent a year adapting to the difference in systems from Maryland to OSU, but there is a reason she was NFOY and a finalist for PGOTY.

Honestly, it is way, way, to early to learn as much as most of us want to gleam from these three games. The competition hasn't been anywhere near Pac-12 level, so maybe we are jumping the gun with our thoughts. Saying that though, we all have our opinions, and I enjoy seeing them. So, a couple more of mine...
I've always thought of Kennedy as a Katie Mac type of player in that she can do a lot of things very well (pass, rebound, block shots, etc) but I've never expected her to be a big time scorer. My view on that hasn't changed yet, but it's obvious she has the ability to play a big time role for the Beavs during her career.
Taylor on the other hand really filled the stat sheets in High School. She definitely knew how to put the ball in the basket, and was a great rebounder and shot blocker as well. I had a feeling that would carry over into college as well. The only thing that gave me any sense of doubt, was the weak competition she played against in High School. I know the competition this week is not strong either, but it's hard to look at Taylor, and not see someone who is going to fill the stat sheets. I really thought that Maddie and Trish would be the post players this year, but I'm now giving Taylor a shot at being the starter at Post by the time Pac-12 play comes around, and if not, she should see strong minutes between the 4 and 5 position this year.
I can tell you that I was someone who really didn't think Jasmine would play much this season, and maybe not even during her career. It's only three games in Italy against weak competition, but she's making me believe in her. Her and Destiny on the court at the same time are lightning fast and a ton of fun to watch. I'm wishing the best for Jasmine, as she seems like a great girl that loves this program.
I'm really going to be interested in the beginning of non-conference play to see where everyone is at. Taya said she wanted to work on her one on one play this summer, and I'm not sure if we've seen that in Italy. Overall, it's hard to tell how playing time has been divided, but it looks like the young players have received their share, so I don't think too many, if any, have logged extenisve minutes.
It certainly looks like the team is bonding. I've really enjoyed the pics, etc from Italy.

I was writing the above post while 2ndGen was posting his, so didn't see it before doing mine. The quality of recruit point he was making is a very, very good one. Four years ago, we recruited one player (Pivec) who was a 5 star (#26 Hoopgurlz), and 3 much lower ranked players - Maddie (89), Kat(93), and Janessa (somewhere around 115 I think). I don't know about you, but I was blown away by our being able to sign that many highly ranked recruits back then.
Foreign players (Simmons, Mitrovic) aren't ranked on Hoopgurlz, but, since that time, Morris is the only player we've signed who wasn't ranked considerably higher than Maddie and Kat. Our current junior class includes Slocum (7), Corosdale (26), and Goodman(63). Our sophomore class is an anomoly, as only Morris is a domestic recruit because of Aquino's redshirt, but our freshman class includes Aquino (21), Brown (19), and Jones (42). We have 2 McD all americans (Slocum and Brown) on this year's team, and we'll add at least 1 more (Goforth) next year - probably 2 after Van Lith commits.
So, on paper, one can see that we are, indeed, progressing rapidly to what 2ndGen described, blue chip players at every position, and 8 or 9 deep. I think we're going to see that on the court this year as well, as, ultimately, minutes are going to be very hard to find for Maddie, Janessa, and Patricia. That's my take on it.

Destiny is very good too, but Pivec's rebounding prowess separates her from the rest. Overall contribution, game in and game out, she's our best. My opinion.

I haven’t watched anything yet, but I am especially pleased to be reading about the attention to speed and the emphasis on defense. These were both things that I missed seeing in games against better competition over the last few years. Seems we have the length and tenacity with all 5 on the floor that can match the needs for running this scheme. That could be a complete game changer for the next three years or so.
