I tried using an electric razor in the late 80s/early 90s. It felt like the operation of the razor was to yank each whisker and slice it off. The longer the whiskers, the more painful the yanking. Maybe things have changed but I gave up electrics by the age of 24.
I've been using cartridge razors ever since. They always worked fine but I quail at the cost of replacement blades.
Now I have to thank you for your article link. I've gotta try the safety razor. Looks like most reviews have the same brands in their top tens and therefore I will go with one of them, probably a Merkur, as well.
Thanks for the article!!! It's not something that I ever thought about until now.

so I just received my razor and the shave cream from the big A. Blades are coming later..the razor came with a sample blade..so I gave it a shot...Its 4pm now and I shaved with my regular process about 11 hrs ago..so a bit of growth. Using a non-lathering shave cream was a bit different and the feel of the safety razor vs the regular cartridge that 'pivots' was also different. I took it slow, but the face feels nice and smooth..still some stubble on the jaw line, but with practice I think I will get better. Orderd a bunch more stuff off the big A as well so I guess now I have a financial commitment...this actually all came about because I was getting low on regular shave cream and was in Costco to buy more..Apparently they are going to a different brand..so they were out of the standard Gillette gel, and hadn't got the 'new stuff' in stock yet... I've been getting a shave & a haircut at my barber. So been thinking about a home version. I remember my grandpa always had styptic pencil marks on his face. I'm afraid I would come out of the bathroom covered in toilet paper pieces all over my face. I do love the hot towel shave at the shop

Ah, I got into it a couple of years back. Bought an DE razor off of Ebay (probably a Gillette) and ordered a variety pack of blades. For a while, I was able to get the Wilkinson Sword blades at Walmart for real cheap. I also bought the Japanese Feather blades cheap in Tokyo. From the variety pack, I enjoyed the Gillette 7 o'clock blades. Never found a shaving cream or soap that stood out above the others. But I didn't try many. And I just ended up feeling it was inconvenient having to order stuff online. I enjoyed perusing Badger and Blade for lots of shaving wisdom and information. www.badgerandblade.com
