I think that the "interim" Dean of Forestry has shown his complete incompetence, and needs to go (he wisely has not applied for the non-interim job) Perhaps Ray should retire early while we attend to an obviously much-needed house cleaning, since I don't see any reaction from him or his office to this very visible event. www.oregonlive.com/environment/2019/07/majestic-douglas-fir-stood-for-420-years-then-oregon-state-university-foresters-cut-it-down.htmlVery sad, especially the pattern of incompetence that emerges over the years in the highly rated forestry department as detailed in this article. When I say "Go Beavers" at the end of my messages in this forum, it isn't to exhort OSUers to cut down 400+ year old trees......

Highly Embarrasing to Oregon State University.

So, Ray is lame duck. No new guy being mentioned that i know of. Total lack of accountability to the administration? that's what this looks like. I wonder what other miscreance is occuring in this leadership vaccum. Thanks Ray.

No, he is busy giving Community Forums to describe the mistakes "we" (I assume he is vaguely referring to "Retired in Place" Ed Ray and bumbling Anthony Davis as the "we") made: www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/osu-takes-heat-for-forest-practices/article_baeabf74-ef1b-521b-ab9c-feae19dac71c.htmlDisappointed in the lack of accountability. But I guess its only egregious if you are a fan of 400+ year old trees, the environment, stewardship, being stand-up, taking responsibility, etc. etc. Otherwise, "we" are doing great. Sigh.

Interesting that I talked to an official from a local timber company last week, someone who knows his stuff.
He told me that 1/3 of the trees that were cut (closest to the road) were already dead. The cut was done (in part) to reduce the fire danger/danger from falling trees, etc., on the adjacent landowners, from a large stand of dead timber. The land will be replanted within a year and the forest will begin to rejuvenate quite quickly.
He also said boring to determine the age of a tree is not cost-effective, when hundreds and hundreds of trees are involved, and that there is some question whether the "sacred" tree is even 400 years old.
His opinion, as a long-time professional forester with a forestry company with a near-impeccable reputation, was this is much ado about nothing.

Thank you, Tobacco Companies

This forestry company has a much better track record and much better reputation than tobacco companies, trust me on that, and has no skin in the game when it comes to how OSU manages its research forests.
I've known the person I talked to for more than 30 years. He is a professional forester with more than 40 years of experience in the woods who has no reason to lie, as his company is not involved whatsoever.

When I say "Go Beavers" at the end of my messages in this forum, it isn't to exhort OSUers to cut down 400+ year old trees...... Another exhibit (GT Article) in the incompetence of our "interim" Dean of Forestry..... When he is not busy getting 400+ year old trees cut down, he is leading forestry facility rebuilds involving significant cost overruns and space cutbacks. And Ed Ray, OSU "retired in place" lame-duck president, has nothing to say about the building issues or the tree chopping issue. Sigh. "Both the wood products laboratory and the Peavy Center had to be scaled back from their original designs to keep costs from soaring still further........ ....Initially projected to cost $60 million, the Peavy Center is now budgeted for $79.5 million, even with the design rollbacks. Its opening date has been repeatedly pushed back...... Go Beavers! (get better leaders!)
