Drew Gilbert won't be enrolling at OSU for fall classes. According to Billy Eggers at the Portland Tribune, Gilbert asked for and was given his release from OSU. Through the MLB Draft signing period which terminated Friday night at midnight, he didn't sign with the Minnesota Twins, so he's headed elsewhere to play college baseball.
Gilbert's decision leaves 5 scholarship pitchers coming this fall - Washburn, Frisch, Hjerpe, Brown, and Murphy plus the Minnesota walk-on, Lattery. Our fall roster depth for pitchers is estimated to be 15, and that includes 10 right handers. Desite his uncertain return, I included Kevin Able in the count but did not include Brittain.

Looks to me like DG ( above ) , may be more fearful of competition than he is coaching changes. I like the guys that are ready to take on the world and are confident they can do it.

Well, there was an interesting dynamic in play with Gilbert. On several interview occasions with the Star-Tribune and Pioneer Press, he said he didn't care where he played as long as he was in the lineup. The interesting aspect of that statement is his demonstrated skill playing CF for Stillwater. He hit .400 as a Junior and .357 as a Senior. He's fast and uses that speed to stretch singles into doubles and doubles into triples. A fearless baserunner that is a SB threat in any situation. Defensively, he shrinks the coverage area for the corner outfielders as his range comes into play. His throwing velocity from the OF has been authenticated at 91 mph. In summary, the guy is D-1 outfield material and that lends credibility to his interview statements. At 5-9 or 5-10, he knows any future in professional baseball lies in the outfield for him, not on the rubber.
That circles back to the speculation that he may have wanted to be an everyday player at OSU - pitching and playing the OF when he wasn't on the hill, and OSU preferred he focus at excelling at one position.

OSU Not alone re: preferring playing either P or OF. Probably true of most elite D1 programs.

Is Kevin Able related to Kevin Abel?

Really hard for kids at the power 5 schools to pitch and play a position. Too time consuming. I would say there are only a few in the Pac-12.

Mathison at Stanford,Yovan at uo,and a third one at either Cal/ASU are the only three in the Pac-12 I can think of. Mathison and Tawa were recruited very hard by osu(Tawa committed to Stanford early) but it's hard to beat a Stanford education. Money is always a factor in baseball recruiting getting only 11.7 scholarships.

That dude from Wazzu maybe the greatest two way player In collegiate history.
John Olerud! He was a sophomore In 1988. He also went on to play In 16 MLB seasons with a lifetime batting average of .295.
Wazzu - In 1988, Olerud hit .464 with 23 HR, 81 RBIs, 108 hits, 204 total bases, and a .876 slugging percentage. As a pitcher, he had an undefeated 15–0 season, and threw 113 strikeouts with a 2.49 ERA. He was a consensus All-American as both a first baseman and pitcher and was named the Baseball America College Player of the Year. WSU again finished third in the six-team West I regional of the NCAA tournament.

Tyson Guerrero (sp?) hit .277 for the Cougs playing outfield in 29 games and had a 3.6 ERA throwing 34 innings on the mound in 2019. In the second game against OSU this season he pitched 6.2 innings of 3 hit ball, allowing 0 runs.

Though Olerud is a great example.
