At least now we know what the problem with Aquino is. I know players who have had stress reactions. The only thing that can be done is rest. The recovery time varies. I will say one thing. People need to forget about Mattie playing center this season. There should be a logjam at that position this season. The Italy trip should only help get the younger players up to speed faster than usual this season

Never mind the stress reaction, unspecified heart condition is the part that jumped out at me in regards to Aquino.

Some of the most interesting comments for me:
Regarding Trish...bright future because of "natural abilities and work ethic". The one question I had about her was about her work ethic. Not that is wasn't good. I just hadn't heard, and firmly believe that if she does have a strong work ethic, she would be a high quality player. Good to see that Coach says she has a good work ehtic.
Regarding Jelena....her athletic abilities somewhere between Grymek's and Hamblin's, but "Jelena has a quick twitch to her". This sounds so right. If you watch her video, she seems pretty slow getting up and down the court, but then I've seen a couple moves to the basket, and I'm like "wow" that was a pretty quick move. I still believe coach is right, it will take an adjustment for her to get ready for the speed of the Pac-12. As a selfish fan, I'd still like to see her redshirt as she adjust and learns, because that 5th year could be pretty special, but Coach knows best, so whatever happens, I'm looking forward to watching her play.
Regarding Sasha.....Coach described her as "already a superior perimeter defender" to anyone on the squad next season. That is pretty impressive!!
And, of course, the bad news, Andrea's heart related condition. I know there are a number of us on this board that figured this was the issue. I know we all wish her the best. If doctors are comfortable enough with treatment to allow her to play, I hope she has an exceptional career, but if not, she has already impressed me with her cheerleading the team while on the bench last season. Everything points to her being an outstanding teammate and great person.

It is terrible news about Aquino, and I hope that at some point or another she is able to get on the court, even if it takes another year. She always seems to be so excited and, as you, mentioned, is still a crucial part to the team on the bench with her constant support and cheering on. It is clear she loves it here at OSU. Can only hope this experience will prepare her for life after college!

Regarding Jelena - I sure hope she has SOME athletic ability, maybe at least catching the ball and scoring at the rim. SR comment scares me

Scott stated Jelena has great hands and can finish at the rim with either......so why would that scare anyone but opponents.

One reassuring thing, is that diagnostics and treatment for heart issues has advanced significantly in the nearly 30 years since the tragic deaths of Earnest Killum (1992) and Hank Gathers (1990). So I'm confident that if and when we do ultimately see Andrea play we won't need to be nervous about her health.

Watching Trish in warmups last year, I noticed that she doesn't just go through the motions. She, to my eye anyway, appeared to take each shot like she would in a game, including the footwork. So I'm not surprised her work ethic is considered strong, and probably was back in high school as well. I would guess that was a big factor in our interest in her. You will recall she was but a 3 star, and her height may have contributed to her being ranked that high. The coaching staff might have thought, there's a player we can work with and develop in the long run.
But I wouldn't look for any huge leap this year, like Marie from junior year to senior. I'm sure she'll be better, but don't look for her to lead us to the promised land. Of course, I'd be very happy to be proven wrong on that.

Previously posted were these short clips of Jelena. In the second clip, the footwork, putting the ball on the ground, the strength to step through that double-team and not lose the ball, the spin and the quick steps to the basket. Hamblin couldn't begin to do any of that even as a senior.

Nwhoopfan--reread the article. I must have totally missed the part about AQ's heart. That certainly changes every thing.
In basketball quick is better than fast. The film that was posted on this site, shows a fraction of Jelena's down court running. The snippets that are shown seem to imply that she gets down court slowely, but they are in no way conclusive. They may have just been her saving her energy. I don't remember how well Grymek ran the floor her Jr year, but with one exception, she was never beaten down the floor by any opposing posts player in any game. She ran the floor really well. Her problem wasn't even a lack of quickness, rather experience and poor hands. I noticed that Jelena has really quick reactions on defense as well. Her getting down the floor might just be a matter of effort an conditioning. She will not have to play really big minutes here so she never will have to save her energy. She looks like she will be an excellent defender in the paint. And because of her moves, she will also command double teams on offense. I don't know if any college player could handle her one on one. She sort of reminds me of a slow and a past his prime but still effective Sabonis on the lesser scale of WCBB.
in respects to Trish. I think her main problem is getting rid of all the bad habits she picked up in middle school and high school. One of those was not extending her defensive range in front of her. She does well to either side but often lets players in front of her get off shots that she should have challenged. I think this is just a habit that was ingrained into her to not leave her feet but rather use her length. She just has to develop a new mindset. We also need to consider that she was not ever really challenged in high school. The work ethic that is noticed is her compensating for that. The light came on for her last season in that She realizes how far she is behind developmentally, especially with respect to her unfulfilled potential. She is now making every effort to catch up via an applied work ethic. In respect to Trish, we can not really know how good she can be because how much of her untapped potential remains, is still a relative unknown. We can, however, assume that she will certainly get better with time.

It was there in the article. I saw it plain as day when I re-read it. Just one of a couple of other things I miss read or missed this last week on this site. I might have to start writing my name on the palm of my hand so I don't forget my name.
