Why not throw a few logs on the flames of speculation?
Possible reasons for a decommit?
1. Something may have changed in what the new staff makeup was planning for Drew in terms of position. Similar to the Christian Chamberlain scenario in 2017. An intriguing left handed pitcher with a D-1 bat playing in the outfield. OSU coaches weren't sure where Christian would play until they saw him during fall baseball. Gilbert is the Minnesota Player of the year on the basis of his mound accomplishments. He also has plus speed, a fast bat and considerable skills in CF. Perhaps that is where Canham and company are with him and he's locked in on one preferred position.
2. It's crowded - the class of 2019 is bringing in 5 scholarship and 2 walk-on pitchers. From his perspective, there is some validity to that concern. The number of serviceable arms still remains around 12 where it has been in recent years.
3. Was he asked to red-shirt? OSU returns 7 experienced pitchers with Soulages coming off a red shirt year and Abel a late season possibility. Innings could be sparse with immediate action more available in other quality programs.
4. Did the terms of his scholarship change? Frankly, I would dismiss that one out of hand.
5. As his departure date came near, did the shock of being 2,000 miles from home suddenly settle in? Homesick before you ever leave home.
6. Did he and and close friend Frisch have a falling out? Doubtful!
7. He was committed to OSU for a long time and all indications on his social media activity were positive. He was enthusiastically committed as recently as June 27.
Why the sudden change?
8. Who was advising him? Family and outside of the family? Was he in contact with other programs and for how long? Nearby UM?
9. Close relationship with another person that might end with being apart?
Have at it, join the party.
