Not sure how the coaching change would effect the decision. Bailey and Yeskie are still here...unless he was expecting Casey to be back at the helm.

Even with NY and PB on board, I imagine if you're 17-18 yrs old and spent your entire life in Minnesota, you really have no clue who Mitch Canham is and you need to know the head coach.
So Mitch needs to get on a plane or phone and do whatever he needs to do.

I agree ochobeavo...Mitch needs to meet this kid and sell his vision on the program. Btw...your pic is of the media guide from about 1975...Carl Runyon,Leon Jordan,Paul Miller,Doug Oxsen, and Steve Bakke. Just a couple years previous is when I started following osu hoops as a youngster. Still have that media guide in a box at home...lol.

The first order of business for any new coach taking over a program is to get face to face with your recruits. In our case that is a difficult task with about 27 committed recruits spread over seven states and two provinces in Canada in the 2020, '21 and '22 classes.
Canham should get an audience with Gilbert. He signed a letter of intent last November and before OSU would grant him a release, I would expect Canham would want to visit Drew in Minnesota. Maybe Canham and Yeskie meet with the family and lay out the plan for Drew.
You never know what has transpired already. OSU may have already set him free. Lundgren seems to assume that has already happened. A coaching change may not be the real issue either. We have six scholarship pitchers in this class with the walk-on Lattery being the 7th. Maybe Gilbert thought it was becoming a bit crowded with not enough innings available in his first year or two.
Personally, I doubt a coaching change is the real issue here.

Ok. I Really don’t know. I thought the kids coming in this fall were “signed” , not committed.... Absent signing a pro contract. When does the “commitment “ turn to signing commitment in baseball ? Or.... since most all of roster is at best partial schollie.... is there even any real signing of an “LOI”..... ?
I really hope Gilbert shows up... along with his bud, Frisch.... they can make a difference.
Post note - part of hesitation is he and family may figure Yeskie is gone after next year. Might be a factor. i really think if Mitch talks to him he can convince kid to stay..... but yea.... 18 yr old kids .......who knows .....he was a 35th rd pick by Twins..... not big money there.

A signed baseball LOI carries just as much weight as a signed LOI in football, or basketball. Here's the logic - if it didn't, why would the NCAA even bother having it?
I checked tonight and see that Gilbert is now being listed as "uncommitted". That would likely indicate he has decommitted and OSU has released him from his obligation. In that scenario, this is well beyond the talking stage and had obviously been going on for a while.
I wouldn't count on anyone at OSU offering any explanation, we'll have to learn the story on the internet.

Why not throw a few logs on the flames of speculation?
Possible reasons for a decommit?
1. Something may have changed in what the new staff makeup was planning for Drew in terms of position. Similar to the Christian Chamberlain scenario in 2017. An intriguing left handed pitcher with a D-1 bat playing in the outfield. OSU coaches weren't sure where Christian would play until they saw him during fall baseball. Gilbert is the Minnesota Player of the year on the basis of his mound accomplishments. He also has plus speed, a fast bat and considerable skills in CF. Perhaps that is where Canham and company are with him and he's locked in on one preferred position. 2. It's crowded - the class of 2019 is bringing in 5 scholarship and 2 walk-on pitchers. From his perspective, there is some validity to that concern. The number of serviceable arms still remains around 12 where it has been in recent years. 3. Was he asked to red-shirt? OSU returns 7 experienced pitchers with Soulages coming off a red shirt year and Abel a late season possibility. Innings could be sparse with immediate action more available in other quality programs. 4. Did the terms of his scholarship change? Frankly, I would dismiss that one out of hand. 5. As his departure date came near, did the shock of being 2,000 miles from home suddenly settle in? Homesick before you ever leave home. 6. Did he and and close friend Frisch have a falling out? Doubtful! 7. He was committed to OSU for a long time and all indications on his social media activity were positive. He was enthusiastically committed as recently as June 27. Why the sudden change? 8. Who was advising him? Family and outside of the family? Was he in contact with other programs and for how long? Nearby UM? 9. Close relationship with another person that might end with being apart?
Have at it, join the party.

How about...
- why does it matter?
- who cares? Not a Beaver, good luck and we'll focus on those who are.
Pretty simple and no speculation required.

Aw shucks 1111, you just popped our balloon. We were set to have a speculation party at a time this board is quieter than a Funeral home, and you decided to p*ss in the punchbowl and ruin our party.
Killjoy, you are.

Hence, stated my opinion... not a Beaver, who cares!
