I think a lot of us have discounted the role Maddie may play in 2019/2020. We can talk about the talent of Taylor, Kennedy, Jelena, Andrea, and Trish all we want, but the fact is, Maddie has been in the program a long time, knows the plays and what coach Rueck wants, has a lot of starts under her belt both at PW and Center, and has some talent.
This team has a lot of talent with Destiny, Aleah, Mik, and Kat covering the guard and wing positions, and Taya at the 4 spot. All this team needs is for someone to be solid, not neccesarily spectacular, in the post, and there is going to be a lot of players that have the opportunity to show they can help in the post. I wouldn't count Maddie out as being one of those players that get a lot of minutes.

Would be very helpful for Maddie to develop some guard skills, particularly a three-point shot. Reading what was said of her in high school, it sounds as if she had solid skills to play the 3, and was a developing three point threat. If she could bring those skills to the 5, she could be a huge mismatch for other teams on the offensive end, knocking down outside shots if no one guards her (like players did to Jo), or blowing by those who do. I love her fire and energy, and think she could be an effective 5 for us, just not a back to the basket scorer. She did show a soft turn around mid range jumper, and extendeding that is key.
UConn’s past two post players were labeled a guard and a wing, and I think Madison could play a similar role if she is able to use her strengths to her advantage.

Over the years I have become a Maddie fan....She's a hard worker, plays a physical position that's not all that natural to her. She's feisty, she's tough and she passes well...She's a team-first player who knows her role and its responsibilities.
As a 5, however, she's got her work cut out for her - especially against taller opponents...In a nutshell, she contributes most when we play a smaller, faster team, and least when we face a team with height, muscle and a strong interior game...
I don't think Rueck would much go along with the idea of having Maddie shoot 3s - except under the rarest of conditions...When she is on the floor she usually has 3, sometimes 4, teammates who shoot the 3 quite a bit better than she does...The idea that she would draw her defender out to check her if she shot 3s is not a good bet....A Big defender would not venture out until Maddie proved time after time that she can hit the 3....The amount of shots it would take for her to become an established threat would take far too many shots out of the hands of far better shooters...All in all, I can't see Coach trying to establish her as 3 threat. Not cost efficient. Not a good use of his perimeter talent...
Back to Maddie....As I mentioned in a previous post (Bigs getting not so big) it's starting to look like when December rolls around Maddie and Morris are going to be the only 5s left standing..(With Kennedy Brown as a fill-in)....This is not for sure, but until AA gets cleared it's looking more and more likely...
As others have posted before, it looks like the development and rapid progression of Patricia Morris is going to be one of the most, if not the most, important factor in a high success season for the Beavs.
At any rate, these are a few ideas to bounce around during off-season doldrums.... GO BEAVS !!

For a team with so many certainties, starter number 5 is a story waiting to be told. It's a story that will be fun to folow this summer and fall and may be filled with twist and turns.
You have the experience of Maddie, who probably doesn't play big enough to be the complete answer. You have the emerging talent, but mostly inexperienced Trish. There's the health and eligibility issues of Jelena and Andrea. There is the new talent arriving from the high school ranks in Kennedy and Taylor. Lastly, there is Janassa, undersized, and a true long shot. If anybody can write the story beforehand on how the final starting position turns out, I would be super impressed. There are so many possibilities of who may end up garnering the largest amount of playing time and filling the starting position in the post.
I could throw out the name I think will end up with the starting position, but reality is, the position will probably be shared by 2-4 of the girls, much like Maddie and Jo shared the position last year.

GO BEAVS !! I agree - it is very unlikely that we see Maddie attempt maybe even one three this season, as she will be the weakest three point shooter on the floor when she is on at almost all times. Shooting the 3 isn’t something the 5 does here, even though a player like Marie was capable. The difference is they were 6’5+ and Maddie is a generous 6’1”. A big reason we lost to UW was their big knocked down some threes, and it took Jo out of her comfort zone because she was forced to respect the shot. We simply aren’t a great team with Maddie at the 5. Maddie is nowhere near the same level as Napheesa Collier or Gabby Williams, and even UConn has been unable to win an NC with the undersized 5s. I don’t expect Maddie to become a three-point threat, but to be a NC-caliber team, we will need something at the 5, and if it is Maddie who will be there - she will need to develop skills to make up for her being 6’1”, something she hasn’t shown a whole lot of. There is a reason that against teams with dominant posts he went with Morris over Washington. The obvious sleeper to me is Jones. Her ProspectsNation ranking of #16 makes her the highest incoming recruit to date (though AA had her brief stints at 6 and 7 she was ultimately around 20). She gives up a little size at 6’3”, but is very long and athletic. I think she has the potential to come in and make a push for big minutes.

Maddie is a 10 foot in shooter, there is very little chance she can extend her range out past 15 feet. Even in warm ups she struggles with the outside shot.
The one that really surprised me last year was Janessa, when she was healthy she could knock down threes in warm ups at a fairly high percentage.
One thing for sure is that both of these ladies bring a lot of energy to the game. They are a joy to watch play.
