Sorry for the poor formatting.... I don't have a ton of time to make this pretty...
Let’s also categorize reasons for leaving, coach’s role, and future success as well
Just the facts Ma’am, here is just the raw list:
Transfers IN
• Keondre Dew (2016)
• Ronnie Stacy (2016)
• Seth Berger (2017)
• Kylor Kelley (2018)
• Payton Dastrup (2018)
• Sean Miller-Moore (2019)
Transfers OUT
• Kendal Manuel (Played for OSU 2015-2017, 2018 transfer to Montana)
• Derrick Bruce (Played for OSU 2015, 2016 transfer to Texas Southern)
• JaQuori McLaughlin (Played for OSU 2016-2017, 2018 transferred to UCSB)
• Ben Kone (Played for OSU 2016-2017, 2018 transferred to???)
• Keondre Dew (Played for OSU 2016, 2017 kicked off team / transferred to )
• Jack Wilson (played for OSU 2018, 2019 transfer to Idaho)
• Warren Washington (played for OSU 2018, 2019 transfer to Nevada)
• Jordan Campbell (played for OSU 2018, 2019 to Fresno State)
Overall numbers wise we have 6 transfers in and 8 transfers out. With the rash of 2018 freshman being a significant hit to depth on a team that was already not very deep.
In terms of actual impact let’s categorize that as well:
Starters / large impact:
IN Kylor Kelley - (although I think that was a surprise to most)
IN Payton Dastrup - will probably be a starter just because of lack of front line bodies :/
OUT Derrick Bruce - was a revelation towards the end of his only year here and should have / would have been a starter going forward
OUT JaQuori McLaughlin - was a starter until the game before he transferred.
OUT Kendal Manuel - Started more often than not, but mostly in a utility fashion
OUT Warren Washington - probable starter next year
I don’t think it is a stretch to say we have LOST more both in terms of sheer number, but also talent and production than we have gained.
Reasons for leaving.
Of course much of this is speculative, since even the words coming from the players and coaches themselves are biased, spun or political. And of course some stories change over time or different sides have different spins so a guy can fall into multiple categories.
Academics / Disciplinary
• Derrick Bruce - www.buildingthedam.com/2016/4/21/11482706/derrick-bruce-leaves-oregon-state?force_emulation=true
• JaQuori McLaughlin - www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2017/12/jaquori_mclaughlin_granted_rel.html
• Keondre Dew - www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2016/11/oregon_state_forward_keondre_d.html
Didn’t like Oregon / too far from home / family issues
• Jordan Campbell - www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2019/01/former-oregon-state-center-jack-wilson-transfers-to-idaho-jordan-campbell-reported-to-fresno-state.html
Wanted more playing time / different opportunity / realized the fit just wasn’t right
• Kendal Manuel - 406mtsports.com/college/big-sky-conference/university-of-montana/q-a-with-kendal-manuel-billings-product-and-oregon-state/article_82f7d5e8-7cfc-5c14-8b9a-31328b19c8ed.html
• Derrick Bruce – Some folks report he was unhappy with not starting over Stevie even though he outplayed him in practice
• Warren Washington -- nevadasportsnet.com/news/reporters/on-second-thought-nevada-the-perfect-fit-for-warren-washington
• Jack Wilson
Had a problem with the coaches
• Derrick Bruce – As said above he felt unfairly pushed out of a starting role until Tres got hurt
• Ben Kone – It was a pretty well known that Ben often grumbled / complained about nepotism, the coach’s sons, and also felt like his injury problems were at least in part caused, or not helped by the coaches and trainers here. Of all the transfers, Ben, is the only one that I think you can truly point to as leaving upset.
• Warren Washington (Maybe??) – Article above says, “It sounds crazy, but I don’t regret one decision coming here," Washington said via phone from Corvallis. "It really changed my view on a lot of things. I have nothing but respect for Coach (Wayne) Tinkle and everything he did for me. He molded me into a better person and I’ll always have love for Coach Tinkle. It’s a good program and I’m excited for them. I’m just ready to move on with Nevada.” So it sounds like he doesn’t hold any ill will towards the coaches, but that same article makes it sounds like he felt he wasn’t being correctly used and played…
Derrick Bruce takes the cake with being in three categories
Future Success :
We don’t know the future success for 5 of these players as 2 seemed to have ended their careers (Dew and Kone) and 3 have yet to play for their future teams.
The ones that have played have taken mostly the same roles as they left, but on a smaller stage, and with similar results:
Derrick Bruce – 17-18 was starting for Texas Southern, producing in a similar manner to what he was doing with the beavs at the end of 15-16. Lost his starting role in 18-19, but still 20 minutes a game off the bench.
Kendal Manuel – 20 minutes a game off the bench for Montana almost exactly matching his stats for the beavers as a starter his redshirt freshman year. 8.7 pts/game. Although he did star (21 pts/game) for the Mozambique national team.
JaQuori McLaughlin – Almost EXACTLY replicated his true freshman year as a junior with UCSB. Started every game, same minutes, 10.3 pts/game. Same assists, rebs, everything.
One other thing that struck me as odd. Three of the 8 transfers happened MID SEASON…. Is that unusual? Is that an academic reality? Fail fall term and poof you don’t come back in Janurary?
I am not really offering any judgement, blame, or opinion, just getting the info all in one place for discussion.... So have at it
