I’ve been to or watched quite a few of the men’s and women’s basketball games in the last few years. It’s extremely impressive what Rueck in particular has done with the women’s program. I felt Tinkle had a good start during his tenure. My question relates to the amount of plays called from the sidelines and the controlling nature of the coaches in their games. Why the need? Do players enjoy such micromanaging? Does it inhibit player’s dynamism? Is it a distraction for the players? I know it is for me. So, just wondering what others think.

I think at times it is good, but at times excessive. Possibly a turn off to certain recruits.

Another Graves shot at the Beav's. He's mentioned a couple of times about how terrible it is when other coaches "micro-manage" their teams by calling "every" play. Gee, I wonder who he could be talking about.
"My question relates to the amount of plays called from the sidelines and the controlling nature of the coaches in their games. Why the need?" Both of the PG's are Sophomore's with Destiny really a Freshman in the system. He's making it all simpler for them so they just have to figure out how to run the play.
"Do players enjoy such micromanaging?" Destiny keeps mentioning how she has confidence that the coach will figure out the way to win. If she's unhappy she's hiding it well.
"Does it inhibit player’s dynamism? Is it a distraction for the players? I know it is for me." Does it inhibit Quarterbacks when the plays get sent in? Are you distracted by it?
It gives the players something to start with. If it isn't working they can and do change it up. Sometimes intentionally LOL.

I've wondered about that as well. It takes up a lot of clock, leaving less time to get into the flow of the offensive possession. But, as I've stated before, who am I to second guess Scott?

"Let 'em play" will just get you smoked. The modern college game (men and women) is incredibly sophisticated - I think, the most sophisticated in the world - and playing without a plan is just foolishness. It is barely different than football, and you wouldn't dream of going into a college football game drawing up plays on the palm of your hand.

I’d rather not watch the point guard continually looking to the sidelines as they’re bringing the ball up. With a once in a lifetime point like Slocum, I’m hoping her skills can be utilized in more of a flow. Rueck has done an amazing job and may also have a learning curve with this type of player. And I imagine as the supporting players change, perhaps his schemes will change. Parenthetically,it intrigues me how attack oriented some replies can be on this board when one poses a question or an opinion. Chill out, some of you! Yes, playing without a plan is pointless, as is starting every possession without a plan. As in football, one wonders about the abilities of a quarterback if the coach is always sending in the plays. Or it maybe the coaches way. Not all coaches or quarterbacks need that. It is my opinion that when “the play is not working” our Beaver players do seem a bit lost. All you Rueck apologists need to calm down. His out of bounds plays are the best I’ve seen. He’s a great coach. Ralph Miller was a great coach and John Wooden was pretty good too. They “coached” during practice and macro-managed during games. Graves is a good coach and I like some of what he does. A closed mind is a dangerous thing. “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” Isaac Asimov

Not once did 76 say play without a plan - you are sooo drama-tic sometimes
