Wrestling begins at 8am pacific...
Quarters:
125: (4) Ronnie Bresser vs (5) Jack Mueller (Virginia) 125 lbs bracket has gone completely chalk with the top 8 seeds all making the quarters. A win here and RB most likely gets a rematch against #1 Sebastian Rivera in the semis.
Mueller was an AA in 2017 at 125, bumped up to 133 last year, back down to 25 this year. He's undefeated on the season - and hasn't really even been challenged, but he also hasn't faced anyone in the top 10 or maybe even top 15 this season.
Heavy: (6) Amar Dhesi vs (3) Gable Steveson (Minnesota). Steveson was ranked #1 for much of the year, was 29-0 before falling to Anthony Cassar 4-3 in the B10 finals. I have no idea what to expect, but I can't wait to see this one - hopefully AD's experience and offense wins out. Winner gets either #2 seed Cassar of Penn State or #7 seed Hillger of Wisconsin.
Consolation:
141: (31) Grant Willits vs (16) Chad Red Jr (Nebraska). GW gets another tough opponent in Red, but everyone left is tough... Red won his 1st match yesterday and then fell 7-3 to #1 seed Yanni Diakomahalis 7-3. No shame in that loss... Grant is a funky match up for some guys and can scramble with anyone. Maybe he can pull off another win.
2 other Oregon kids in the quarters: Tyler Berger(Nebraska/157) and Samuel Colbray (Iowa State/184).
Both Hayden Maley (Stanford/Hwt) & Tanner Harvey (American/184) lost a couple close ones yesterday and are out.

125: ESPN announcer let's us know that up next is Ronnie BRESSLER from OR-GONE State. sigh.
Bresser (or Bressler) comes out with neon green tights on under his singlet, straight from the oregon ducks hoops collection. umm Okay. Mueller definitely looks the bigger of the two.
1st period: 1st shot attempt from RB. no dice. Scoreless 1st.
2nd: RB starts on bottom. RB to his feet quickly, peels away hands and gets an escape. 1-0 RB. Both guys pretty cautious, ties, feints, level changes. Mueller hasn't taken a shot yet. End of 2nd. 1-0 RB.
3rd period: Mueller bottom, up easy and out. 1-1. Takedown likely wins in the 3rd or we go to OT. 30 seconds to go, nothing happening. Restart... These guys are about 6 feet apart, we're going to OT.
SV/OT: suddenly we're wrestling, shot attempts by each. No scoring. Mueller now takes bottom. Stalemate, restart. Stall warning on RB and now a challenge by Zalesky with :06 left. Bresser rides him out for the 30 seconds. Now RB takes bottom. If he escapes he likely wins. RB nearly out, but Mueller gets legs in. 1 OT complete.
SV2: Neutral period ends, no score. Back to ride outs. RB starts on bottom. These guys are evenly matched. RB flattened, not good. Mueller easily gets the 30 seconds. Bresser up slowly. RB on top. Basically let's Mueller go. Mueller escapes & now has the lead, RB needs a takedown to win doesn't get it, Mueller with a late takedown and a 4-1 victory. Questionable move by RB letting Mueller up in the 2nd OT.
Bresser now gets either #10 Fleetwood (ND State) or #17 Schroder (Purdue) in the blood round. I blame the neon tights.

141: Grant Willits vs Red. Take down Red (Big 10 runner up). Tight waist tilt for back point, quickly 6-0 Red. Reversal GW. 6-2. Reversal Red, 8-2. Escape GW, 8-3 Red at the end of 1st.
2nd period: Red takes bottom. quick escape, 9-3. Takedown 11-3. Escape, 11-4. End of 2nd.
3rd period. Willits on bottom. Riding time locked up for Red. Red wins 12-4. Grant's season is over.

The Big Guys
#6 Dhesi vs #3 Gable Steveson.
1st period - take down Steveson. Man he's strong and equally quick. Escape Dhesi 2-1. Steveson slick ankle pick and takedown 4-1. Crap. Need an escape before the period ends.. not gonna happen. Steveson tilt for a quick 2. 6-1 Steveson.
2nd period - Dhesi chooses neutral. Needs a takedown badly. Jinx. Steveson gets the takedown 8-1. Has nearly 3 minutes of RT. 8-1 after 2.
3rd period - Steveson chooses neutral. Penalty x2 on Dhesi for hands to face, 10-1. AD losing composure a bit here. Steveson with the dominating win 11-1. Somehow he's an 18 yr old true freshman. (Steveson was/is my pick to win it all at Heavy but I'd love it if he lost).
Early session goes as badly as possible. Let's see how they bounce back. AD should be a heavy favorite vs whoever he sees next, but needs to be locked in mentally.

Oh so close! That QF hump has been tough on us. Feel for Ronie though, that's a tough way to lose

Oh so close! That QF hump has been tough on us. Feel for Ronie though, that's a tough way to lose Disappointed he didn't try to ride Mueller out in the 2nd OT period - quote from Mueller afterwards: "I wanted to go the distance, he didn't want to do that." He's got #10 Fleetwood next - RB took care of him pretty easily back in December, but that was then. I think he grinds out a decision.

Blood Round
Bresser vs #10 Fleetwood. 3-3 and in to OT. Bresser gets a takedown with about 15 seconds left to win 5-3! AA Status clinched!
Ronnie gets #11 Arujau of Cornell next.
In other news - Mueller of UVA just completely destroyed #1 seed Rivera. Rode him for 5:30. Wow. No one saw that coming.

I wonder if Ronnie was tired, lapse of concentration, or confident in his game/strategy in that moment.

Dhesi vs #26 Ian Butterbrodt (Brown U). Quick takedown by AD. 2-0. Dhesi has the size advantage here... Dhesi in control 8-2 going into 3rd, 4 minutes of RT. Now 12-3. Dhesi wins 13-3 and is officially an All American.
Meanwhile Bresser up again, loses 8-5 to Cornell. I missed it.. sounds like Cornell kid was tough on top... that means he’s in the 7/8 place match. Bummer.

Dhesi with one more tonight - vs #7 Hillger of Wisconsin. Dhesi gets the quick pin in the 1st round and is still alive to finish as high as 3rd. Way to bounce back!
