At the end of the Northeastern/Kansas game as Kansas was emptying their bench the announcer said 'here come the walk-on's and it made me revisit what I ponder at times: Why would an athlete want to be a practice player on a D1 team vs. starting on a lower division team? I could name some reasons but was wondering if anyone on the board had that choice and would share their experience.
Thanks

Because they'd rather go to KU, graduate from KU, be associated with a great program, and perhaps help their future careers by being associated with KU hoops, than go to Pittsburg State or Emporia State or Fort Hays State?
I gave up trying to figure out why other people do the things they do a long time ago.

Colin Cowherd went to Eastern Washington so if you're good you still got a shot and if you're not you still may be found out. But, it's true that people do what they do.

Great apples to broccoli comparison. Did Colin have a chance to walk on to Broadcasting U, but since he had a broadcasting schollie to EWU he went there?

Faulty premise...Colin ain't that good. I enjoyed him when he was local. When he went to the ocho he bought everything the handlers & ratings guys told him to do. aka...edgy. aka...sellout. Don't miss him a bit

Obviously he's had a successful "talking about Sports" broadcasting career, so this might come across as sour grapes on my part, but FTG. He's annoying as hell. I never listen/watch any longer.

Thanks You ever see those videos where the coach surprises the walk-on with a scholarship at the end of practice and the entire team mobs the kid? And then they go to Applebees and celebrate? I made up that part. Anyhow... plenty of kids out there chasing that dream.

If I knew that my last year playing NAIA hoops was going to be my last, outside of some all world performances I had in city league, I would have opted for the walk-on life. How fun would that be. Those boys are way better self evaluaters (word?) than I was 😂
