Follow-up question - Do Oklahoma State and Iowa State provide the same number of opportunities for student athletes? Does the Big 12 have different requirements for amounts spent on Olympic Sports, does it have a different requirement for number of Division I sponsored sports? One thing I do know - Oklahoma State has more than 7,000 members in their "POSSE." Iowa State has over 6,000 annual donors in their Cyclone Club. Oregon State has less than 4,000 in Our Beaver Nation. It's not just the athletic department that isn't supporting the program at a level consistent with other schools across the country.....we as fans aren't pulling our weight either. 2016-17 money earned from contributions and ticket sales: Oklahoma State: $35,252,488 Iowa State: $31,811417 Oregon State: $23,132,081
And just for comparison: Oregon: $82,205,872 Washington: $61,847,874 UCLA: $40,424,681 California: $34,013,478 Arizona: $33,660,313 Arizona State: $29,835,975 Colorado: $29,788,476 Utah: $26,128,703 Oregon State: $23,132,081 Washington State: $15,869,147
The fact that Oregon State went 10-8 this year is all the more impressive, when you really start to dig into it............Those oregon and UW numbers just blow everyone out of the water good lord.

The TOTAL spent on athletics comes from various sources. OSU would have far more money to spend directly on the major money producers, thus maybe more success and more donations, IF 50% of said total $ weren't spent on administration. It doesn't matter where the $ come from if 50% is earmarked to go elsewhere. If you knew up front that 50% of every dollar was going to admin would you donate to a charity?

OK so say we have an extra $3M a year to spend on football/men's basketball. How is that money spent to make us more successful? I guess that's what I'm missing here.....are we losing because we have 55 inch TVs in the players lounge instead of 80 inch TVs? Is it that Reser/Gill aren't nice enough? Do we need more helmets/jerseys? Do we need to pay our coaches better? Is this a death by a thousand cuts type situation, or is there one thing we can say "THIS. This needs to change now?"

I think you’re partly right even though you weren’t trying to be. Finish Reser makes Osu football more attractive to players and coaches. Pay coaches better get better coaches. To me, that’s where you get the most bang for your buck.

Coaches salaries. The best coaches get paid the most.
OSU has the worst combined record of football and men's basketball winning seasons in the past 30 years among Power 5 programs. OSU spends the least in these sports despite having more overall to spend than roughly one third of the programs.
OSU spends the most in the Pac-12 on baseball and is among the best supported in all of college baseball. Do you think those expenses were worth it?
Do you think that Coach Smith got his first choices for assistant coaches? His former employer spends more than $10 million per year on coaches salaries while OSU spends $5 million. Outside of one assistant, none are considered excellent in the coaching trade. A couple are widely considered good. The rest are question marks because he didn't have the money to attract the best.
Recruits - the programs that spend the most typically have higher ranked recruits than the those like OSU who spend the least.
