I never believed that Jo was as bad as some played her up to be before the season started. For one she is what used to be referred to as a space eater. She is a big gal. Not only big but tall. She runs the floor much better than her size gives the appearance of. Her slow reactions were more the result of inexperience in the offense and defense than it was ability. Her only real weakness is hands and they are are improving with time as well. As has been mentioned she changes a lot of shots just by her intimidating size. She sort of scares people out of driving the paint. I would love to see her matched up against McCowan. I think her size would negate what McCowan does best. I certainly do no believe nor have ever believed that McCowan would eat her up. Jo is actually in pretty good shape for someone of her size and that showed in how she was able to play most of the game against running teams like USC and UCLA. McCown would not have been able to keep up the pace. Neither would Brown.
Morris has also improved as well. I think so much that it should no longer be necessary for Mattie to play the post but just fill in at the forward position.

I think I would rather see Baylor than Mississippi State. I think Jo matches up fairly well with McCowan. Brown has a much better offensive skill set.

Thing is, we made the Elite 8 last year with Gulich, and certainly (vs Tennessee) wouldn't have made it even to the Sweet 16 without her. In the NCAAs, Jo will have to go against big, quick, and cagey centers that Gulich could match with her own quickness and experience. Against McCowan, or Baylor's new young bigs, or Louisville's aggressive and experienced center, Jo will be totally outmatched and probably pick up a foul on any attempt to block a shot. Look at her performance against Aniqwe: In 21 minutes, she had 3 fouls trying to keep pace with Anigwe, plus just 4 rebounds, 4 points, and 3 blocks. It'll get worse in the NCAA's. Her size won't be nearly the asset that it has been against the shorter players she's seeing in the Pac-12. Compare Jo's performance vs Cal to PM's performance. In 7 minutes, Morris had 7 points and 2 rebounds and 1 foul. PM, though inexperienced, has some innate skills that JG has not developed. To make the round of 16 this year, it'll take huge performances from our guards, as usual. Our center and power forward position are positions of great weakness.

Maddie does not look happy about her limited playing time. I was wondering about her future with the program next season the other day. With Morris and Aquino joining the picture next year I see Maddie's playing time drop further. I feel bad for her, but I understand that we do want the best player on the court. I enjoy watching her play. She reminds me of Syd, in that she works hard at what she does, but is having the time of her life the whole time. The Elmira Beaver Sick of snow...

Unfortunately as SR has OSU on the uptick and better and better recruits become interested and sign, others will lose PT and leave the program. It's happened almost every year the last 5 (?). The MW and JT don't "fit" the size nor skill level of the 4/5s now being signed. The same happened recently with 1/2/3s. It's the nature of the process and while we can love their play feel for them, it's a huge step in becoming an elite program. Not always comfortable, but it's what happens when you attract elite talent. There will be players leave this off season. We'll wish them well on their journey, and thank them for being Beavers.

To make the round of 16 this year, it'll take huge performances from our guards, as usual. Our center and power forward position are positions of great weakness. I totally disagree with you. Jo will match up better against Brown and McCowan than against smaller more mobile centers. Players like McCowan and Brown use their size and height much like Jo does. McCowans game is on the offensive boards. She gets rebounds and puts up shots over shorter players. You put a big body and someone close to her height between her and the basket and you negate what she does best. Now Brown has a pretty good mid range shot all the way out to the free throw line, but with the type of zone that Oregon St plays they can stop that. Baylor does not shoot the three well at all. They player they will have to contend with is Cox. I recently watched a high school match up of a Mc Donalds selection against an inexperienced frosh who does not play much for her high school team. They are both big girls around 6'5". The Senior was a much better and more developed player but the frosh pretty much shut her down because she was not used to facing someone of her size and height. Match ups in basketball plays a big part. Gulish gave Brown fits because she was not used to someone who could match up physically with her. She had to go out side to score. Big girls like Brown and McCowan, because they do not face players like themselves often have a hard time adjusting. They can not just go up and power their shots. Jo did better against Aniqwe than you gave her credit for. She really bothered her. It doesn't matter what Jo does offensively if she is able to limit the scoring and production of the other teams best offensive player. This would be the case against McCowan. Jo would not be successful offensively against her, but as long as she limits McCowan ( who MS relies on ) she will be successful. You are focusing entirely too much on stats. Limiting your assignments production often does not show in the stat line. I know a lot of you see the potential in Morris- as do I. The thing is that each of them bring a different quality to the floor. Too many of you focus on what Jo does not bring without considering what she does. As Morris gets more comfortable with the level of play and he offense and defense her play will improve. She certainly covers more ground. But against physical players she is less effective. Players like McCowan and even posts with less size but equal physicality would be able to push her out. As I always say each player brings a different dynamic to the table. I is all about which dynamic is more valuable at any given time. Scott is especially adept at taking advantage of a playerss strength while mitigating their weaknesses. In respect to Mattie- she did much better filling in at the post position than could be expected for someone of he size. But realistically she was very handicapped defensively against some larger players who just overwhelmed her. Offensively she was hot to start out, but as with every player she sort of cooled off. That offensive production is what gave her the floor time and as Jo and Morris got better she lost time at the 5 position. Scott now has a lot of flexibility at that position with Mattie filling in the right circumstance and match ups. actually it is Morris development that has cut down the time for Mattie. Her mobility also matches up well against the more mobile teams Mattie use to play against. She, however, has the advantages of the shot blocking and rebounding that her length gives her. Matties need at the 5 position has diminished considerably. As many have stated - Oregon St plays best with a tall center and that is why the are flocking in in droves.

I agree Maddie and Janessa’s skill sets don’t really fit. Neither is much of an outside threat, which Rueck prefers at the 4, and neither is over 6’4”, which Rueck likes at the 5.

A few games before she was injured and now that she is back I have noticed that Janessa had been hitting threes in warm ups. Not just a couple but 5 or more in a row.

The doctors took the opportunity to realign that central finger - it's helped her accuracy tremendously.
