Ok so season is NOT over... but looking ahead to Dhesi and Bresser leaving, what is the future looking for the team? It's been one of the toughest years and it doesn't help that the best wrestlers are gone after.

My anticipated lineup next season
124 Brandon Kaylor 133 Devan Turner 141 Grant Willits 149 Logan Meek 157 Hunter Willits 165 Mateo Olmos 174 Colt Doyle 184 Bob Coleman/Jackson McKinny 197 Jamarcus Grant/JJ Dixon 285 Christian Robertson
Other options may be that Grant bumps to 149 and Conner Noonan is 141. It will be Willits brothers and Doyle's team. Others need to improve and do better than they did this season. Their improvement will be the story of 19-20 season. New comers like Kaylor, Dixon, Meek need to wrestle at 60% or higher on wins. It will be tough. Stanford and ASU have very good kids in RS this year. When they are unleashed they will make us seem like we are falling further behind. Fresno is recruiting well, they will only get better.
Best outcome for this season: 2nd place in conference, 4 go to NCAA's, and 2 or 1 finalists in Pittsburgh. Worst 3rd or 4th in conference, qualifying 3 guys. Two on auto qualifiers, 1 on an at large, then 1 or none make All American.
Depending on what happens on March 9th in Tempe and 2 weeks later in Pittsburgh, admin needs to take a serious look at the program.

The results haven't been pretty, but I really think Olmos might not be too far away in terms of making a leap to the next level. Coleman pretty much is what he is at this point, we know what we're gonna get - but next year will be rough as far as the bigs go. Anticipate Kaylor will take some lumps next season, but still think he'll end up being pretty solid. I'm really still not sure what to make of Turner after a couple seasons of watching him.

In my opinion, until we can start competing in recruiting expect a steady decline in the program. We are being out recruited big time! Didn't capitalize on the success of winning the Pac-12 several times, now an afterthought. I think we need new blood and a coach that has had recent National success. Zalesky has had past success, but it appears that current athletes/recruits are not buying what is being sold.

Goes without saying that that's painful to hear. Losing TS and KR were a really, really big deal.

My following OSU Wrestling goes back to the days of Larry Bielenberg, and I think it is time for Les Gutches to become less involved in building local health clubs and return to coach the Beavs - heck Larry is only 5 years older than me, bring him back at least as the world's oldest grad assistant . Seriously, it is time for the spirit of Dale Thomas to return! Like Coach Casey in baseball, he taught a way of life as much as he taught how to win in 9 minutes or less on the mat each week.

It feels ASU getting Zeke and FS getting Steiner changed the complexion of the west coast. And affected schools like Staford to bypass us. Just at the start of the decade it was Boise vs us for the west coast dominance. With that said, if gymnastics and women's basketball found an audience and a big following, there's got to be a way for wrestling to make it happen in Corvallis.

For the last few Lavonda years (and early Z years) wrestling was actually out drawing women's basketball in attendance. Enter Rueck and a few great classes, ability to compete on the National level. The result is Gill drawing huge #'s and you have to pay to get in vs using a Winter Sports Pass to get in. We have good facilities. Other coaches see it when they come out to compete with us. Like was mentioned above I think coach Steiner did a lot of the day to day items with the program and now we are seeing the effects of that with he being gone.
I am convinced this town will support a winner. The most I have seen for wrestling is 3500 in the mid 90's when we had Gutches, Renner, Mohamadi, Neiradka's on the team. The largest draw was when Oklahoma State came to town.

Babak, Dave and Glen, Les. Seems like a long time ago. We've had a lot of good wrestles since those guys, and quite a few under Zalesky........but.....
I've said it before, and I'm not a "fire the coach" type of guy, but this historic program is teetering on being lost. We all know that wrestling isn't a huge draw, and athletic departments on the west coast are putting wrestling programs out on the ice flow left and right, but there is ZERO reasons why OSU shouldn't be the pre-eminent program of the west.
It is time to thank coach Z for his time and effort, and turn the keys over to someone young and enthusiastic who can land the NW talent and develope a real goddam wrestling room.
Les is a big name around here, and that might be all it takes. Nobody asked Cael Sanderson if he could coach. It didn't matter. His legend mattered.
I'm not saying Les is the guy. I am saying it is time for a change. The AD isn't staying up at night worrying about the future of the OSU wrestling program, but I'm sure the thought of cutting it's expense from the budget has crossed his mind a time or two. That cannot happen. It's time for a change.

It also starts with recruiting. There really should be no reason more than half the wrestlers seem like walk ons at the Pac-12 level. We should be first choice for anyone in the PNW, and there are some good wrestlers out here.
