Noticing that Taya has really improved her rebounding, and that there has obviously been some of the team that has really stepped since Kat went down, I took a look at the stats.
Just a few interesting notes from what I saw:
In conference play, Jo now leads the conference in fg%....though she barely has enough attempts to qualify.
Taya has moved up to #10 in the league in rebounds, but in conference play, she is tied for fourth, and only a couple rebounds away from second. Rebounding is something we really need from her position, so kudos to her for really stepping up.
While listening to the broadcast team in the Washington State game, when Pivic was mentioned as a great rebounding guard, they felt to bring up Ionescu as well, so I thought I would take a look at their rebounding, which led to more stat comparisons. I knew Ionescu had been shooting lights out from 3pt land, but when I looked it up, I found a few surprises.
Ionescu: Pivic:
minutes per game: 34.8 overall 35.9 conference 32.1 overall 35 conference shots per game: 14.8 overall 16.2 conference 10 overall 10.4 conference FG%: 44.6% overall 40% conference 56.5% overall 56.6% conference 3pt %: 44.7% overall 32% conference 50% overall 46.7 conference points per game: 19.4 overall 18.4 conference 15.1 overall 17.1 conference free throw attempts per game: 4.2 overall 3.8 conference 4.2 overall 5.4 conference rebounds: 152 overall 54 in conference 184 overall 74 in conference
Now I better go double check those numbers to make sure I didn't screw up. What I was shocked about was Ionescu's conference FG% drop and 3pt% drop, although her minutes are up and she's taken more shots. Sabally has really improved her numbers the last few weeks that may lead to less rebounds for Ionescu, but you would think that would help her shooting percentage, but that is not what the stats are showing so far.
Pivic on the other hand, is scoring just over one point per game less than Ionescu in conference play, while shooting 6 less shots per game.....and with 20 more conference rebounds. I'm not really trying to compare players, because individual stats don't tell the whole story, but I do think that there are many that don't recognize what a great year Pivic is having.

Corosdale is most definitely coming into her own.Early on in the season, she looked like she lacked confidence, and her 3 point field goal percentage was rather low. I'd like to see a comparison of her stats for the first 12 games versus the 8 in conference. Also, the last several games, 8 or 9 rebounds seems commonplace for her.

It would be interesting to compare possessions per game for us and uo, too. I think they probably have more, because they play at a faster pace. If so, that makes Pivec even more efficient because she's compiling superior numbers on fewer team opportunities.

I always have to remind myself that Pac-12 in the Larry Scott era is a media company (albeit a somewhat poorly run media company, witness the satellite access debacle between DirecTV and Dish and Pac-12 channels).......and so they are looking for "Media Sensations". uo understood that well and have been helping to create a "media sensation" with the triple-double NCAA record holder thing (though some super high level athletic skills are required to achieve that, I will acknowledge). Hence Sabrina is going to get lots more attention, since it fits the network agenda to promote her.
It is clear announcers are also being briefed to push the "media sensation" - hence you can't talk about a great rebounding guard named Pivec during a game with Pivec without obligatory media sensation mention. Not much different that when you tune into a news segment on different sports channels you get a heavier dose of whatever sports they have the contracts for (hockey, soccer, whatever).
For us to expect that Pac-12 network, or any other network, to focus just on talent for the sake of talent is sadly unrealistic. I know you all get this, I just have to remind myself of this fact - great to see that close examination of stats and efficiency bear this fact out as well.
(On the flip side, most people/players/coaches wanting massive media attention have a personality type that likely doesn't fit our culture very well......).
I remember SR's mini-rant in the interview after the Tennessee tourney game (I think) where he said "do you know who Pivec is, do you know who Kat is, do you know who Marie is.........." - a lovely moment.

Nice comparison chart and a real eye-opener on Pivec's contributions to this Beaver team. I'm curious how they stack up on turn overs and assists. I'm guessing Ionescu leads in both of those categories as well. She is an assist machine, but also gets very careless with the ball and turns it quite often.

On the Season Mik averages 3.4 assists per game and a 1.4 assist to turnover ratio (2.4 to/game). In conference Ionescu’s numbers are 7.8 assist/game, 2.6 assist/turnover, and Mik’s are 2.9 and 1.1. Ionescu isn’t an elite shooter, is a very good rebounder for a guard with little athleticism, but is one of the top few distributors in the country.

Her defense is also quite solid. If her overall progression continues, 2 years from now she will be PAC12 first team. Can’t wait to see a few of her excellent quick-release inside passes next year to KB.

I was about to post that Taya is turning into our best passer on the team, and then I thought I should qualify it to "best entry passer into the paint".......she really knows how to lob into Jo or directly to a cutting KTMac or.....keeps the ball high and puts it on a non-tippable trajectory (sometimes our other guards have their passes tipped). That said, I love Aleah's one-handed passes on the run into the open court. Or Destiny's long bombs, or Mik's javelin like throws. On a team of great passers, Taya still has shown some good improvement there, along with driving more recently, and upping her success rate on 3s, and how about that "get the opponent in the air and flying past her, dribble side step and let fly" move from the arc? Yes, Pac-12 first teamer in the making, and could come earlier than her senior season.....

I think Pivec gets a lot of love during the broadcasts though. There was even a jab the P-12 Networks did towards Ionescu when the commentators say there's not a better guard in the league (?) than Pivec.

Sabrina is shooting 44.7% from 3 which puts here in the top 20 in the country - ahead of anybody on OSU, including Aleah. She's even ahead of her teammates Sabally and Boley. So she's the best 3pt shooter on the #2 ranked 3pt FG% team (only behind OSU) ... hard to argue she's not an 'elite' shooter.

Not true about Ionescu being a better three-point shooter than anybody on OSU's roster, according to this season's shooting stats. Both Tudor's and Pivec's three-point field goal percentages are greater than that of Ionescu this season. Beaverstever is likely making that statement because Tudor and Pivec haven't taken enough shots to qualify in the rankings that he is referencing. Ionescu shot exceptionally well against non-conference competition earlier this season. However, for those who have referenced her declining shooting of late in conference games, that is likely what contributed to the reference to Ionescu not being an "elite" shooter. I know that she shot relatively poorly (39.0%) from the field as a freshman, but improved to 46.8% overall from the field as a sophomore before regressing a bit to 44.6% this season. Ionescu has shot very well from three-point range throughout her collegiate career, reflective of being a very good set shooter when she has time to launch from beyond the arc. She has proven to be an "elite" three-point shooter in college, but is far from an elite shooter with respect to her overall shooting percentage from the field. If you force Ionescu off the three-point line and don't bail her out with fouls when she is in the act of shooting (she has a tendency to flail even when she is not touched), she is far from an elite two-point field goal shooter. Her career and per season shooting stats are shown in the link below and bear out that reality. goducks.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5948static.osubeavers.com/custompages/WBB/teamcume.htm?path=wbball&path=wbball

However, she is apparently playing with pretty bad tendinitis in one knee that some have claimed is impacting her shot.

The only argument against her being an elite shooter is that her 3 pt. shooting percentage has dropped quite a bit in conference play. However, she is apparently playing with pretty bad tendinitis in one knee that some have claimed is impacting her shot. Ionescu is a very good free throw shooter as well as three-point shooter when she has the opportunity to stand still when she shoots. However, her overall shooting percentage from two-point land when she is more closely guarded has continued to drop during conference play. Perhaps it is due to her tendinitis as noted above. I had not read that until seeing the post above. Guard Ionescu with a hand up at the three-point line and avoid body contact when she drives and flails when shooting. If you make Ionescu shoot over you while in motion, opponents can easily live with her shooting percentage from within the arc and away from the free throw line. She becomes more mortal when that happens.....

I started this post, and thought it would be more about the improvement from some of the Beavs since Pac 12 play started, and not really a post about Ionescu. I was surprised to see Ionescu's stats had been so much weaker during Pac-12 play. Ionescu is an elite talent, but her in conference stats (other than assist) would not be considered elite, especially her 3pt% and her overall FG%. I had not heard about her having 'bad' tendinitis. If true, that is too bad for her. I would rather see her healthy.
