I absolutely loved the "Release the Krakow" reference (see Tweet below) to the classic "Clash of the Titans" phrase on the Beavers WBB Twitter site following Jo Grymek's follow that beat the first quarter buzzer yesterday. If you haven't taken the time to follow that Twitter site during or after a Beavs game, you just may find yourself chuckling and entertained by the wit that is consistently put on display in that social media forum.
Grymek gave the Beavs a combined 21 points on 10/12 shooting from the floor during her squad's two road wins in Washington this past weekend.

She definitely stepped up this last weekend. She also played better defense.

Her rebounding against WSU was very poor. Time after time she missed out on what should have been easy rebounds.

She is not a great rebounder. However, she is doing so much better than predictions in a lot of pre-season posts on this site where 21 points seemed unlikely even for the entire season. The PAC 12 announcers are also taking notice of Jo’s improvement. At the same time, the next few weeks bring some very athletic players under the basket.

Not liking her rebounding. Over the weekend, at least 75% of the time (maybe 90%) that a rebound was up for grabs between 2 or 3 players, Jo (with several inches on the others) did NOT secure the ball. Not sure if it’s entirely due to limited jumping...I’ve gotta wonder if strength might be a factor. Can’t believe it’s heart, because she plays with plenty of that.

She also got victimized by at least one BS foul call where she secured a rebound without contact against a shorter WSU player but apparently violated her “airspace”. Might have made Jo a little tentative afterward

I have come to realize that while I was guilty in the pre-season and earlier this season in wanting Jo to become more like Ruth or more like Marie, that is never going to happen. Jo is going to become a "better Jo" - a player who continues to hone her skill set, which is not necessarily the rebounding/blocking phenom Ruth was, or the scoring/FT shooting/dynamic phenom Marie was. It is however a skill set that can obviously still contribute to our game dramatically, and present a changeup and a mismatch with respect to our other paint players. And we are starting to see that in a marvelous coaching job that is stair stepping Jo to maximize her potential here and now.
If you had bet me, even 3 games ago, whether Jo could snatch a rebound from 9 feet away and go back up with it all in a matter of ~4 seconds and hit the shot, I would have lost a lot of money on a confident "no way" bet.
We are actually getting much better production out of her than we had even projected at the beginning of the season, where some had penciled in AA or PM as the starter. That production helps explain in part our record thus far.
What is fun about this season - how many more steps on that stair case can Jo get coached up to take? Is she firmly planted on the step she is standing on now in the light of more "true" post players coming soon? How will the coaching staff use Jo's skill in upcoming games? Is more aggressive rebounding a step or two away?
Fun times, and if this past weekend is Jo being Jo consistently, we are still doing pretty well in the paint. And given the pleasant surprises she has dished up for me at the very least in these past few games, I am not betting that we have seen her ceiling yet this season.
Go Beavers!

Jo just doesn't have great "basketball hands" yet. I am not sure what it is, strength, grip, positioning of the ball off the boards, but she loses a lot of rebounds to smaller players that just take them away from her. That's an experience/practice thing that will improve with time. I am happy with the total output at our center position, as a group. And it certainly helps our defense to have someone that big in the middle at times. Lots of lousy contested 3 point shots by teams that can't risk penetrating the paint.

She's not going to grow them in the 10 regular season games remaining in her senior year either. But we're still 3rd overall in rebounding margin per game in Division 1, so I just try to accept it for what it is. If she can get us 6 to 10 points and 3 or 4 rebounds in her time on the court, that'll do. Anything over that is a bonus.
