I admit I'm baffled by this game. First half Kianna was under control, and Katie guarded her most of the time. 2nd half she went wild and Katie never guarded her, that I noticed anyway. The Beav's tried to force the ball inside over and over so that the Devils got 6 blocks. Their next highest total in blocks is 3, mostly they get 1. And no, the problem wasn't our posts. They got a combined 16 points and 9 rebounds. Last year ASU tried to beat the Beav's using the same game plan two times. The second time they got hammered. I hope we don't get that same lesson. We absolutely missed our post presence on the defensive side of the ball (block shots, changing shots, and defensive rebounding). Remember Marie Gulich? Ibis is a fantastic player, and Ibis' experience & confidence in getting the shot she wanted, made a huge difference in this game. Marie Gulich also brought defensive double teams from the opposing team's and that freed up our other bigs last year, like Taya. I would have liked to have seen Rueck put Trish in for a few minutes and see if she would have made a difference early in the game (like when he substituted in Jas). OSU will have a plethora of BIGs next year. I'm still happy with this team, they played their guts out. ASU is an excellent team. They are going to do damage in the NCAA Tournament.

Remember, this is the same team Gülich went OFF for 36 against. She was pretty much unstoppable. Splitting double and triple teams for easy layups. I’m pretty sure they returned everyone from last year’s team. They are also a pretty veteran club, Ibis, Chapman-Johnson, and Ekmark all seniors. We don’t have that true post presence that we’ve had in the past (where they need a double or triple team to be stopped). Not that Maddie and Jo aren’t providing solid minutes, but we’re all used to Gulich and Hamblin, the 6’5/6’6, mobile, skilled post.
I was going to create a seperate thread for this, but I feel it is still too early, but who is going to be that presence next year. Maddie, Janessa, Kennedy, Taylor, Andrea, or Trish. Definitely a big thought. Obviously three are question marks as we’ve never seen them play a college game. Even the top-ranked posts aren’t always ready for college ball freshman year. UConn’s Olivia Nelson-Ododa isn’t. Sometimes a lot of people find themselves having a lot of hope for freshman, but they need time. Hopefully Jones, Brown, and Aquino are quick learners.

Again, at the end of the FQ we had a foul to give, did not use it, and ASU scored. I simply do not understand why that continues, game after game, with the same results.

There were many strange "things" going on in this game. I believe there was one other situation like that, but ASU did not score. And the foul with 1 sec off the cock, down 2 (75-73) with 31 sec... why not play D/go for a steal for 8-10 sec... Richardson (79.4% on the season) makes both to put ASU up 4??? Katie hits the 3 afterward, but to intentionally foul there seemed to be a panic move.

Sometimes you just wind up losing a game you could have won. There were several opportunities in this one that didn't work out. The one that sticks in my mind is the first overtime. We entered that period with, I believe, 3 time outs according to the scoreboard, but used them all. With the score tied, we got a rebound with about 13 seconds left. If we had a time out, Scott could have used it, advanced the ball past midcourt, set up a play, substituted if need be, and made sure everyone knew the clock. Instead, Pivec dribbled upcourt and took a jump shot with about 10 seconds left. Even if it goes in, they still have lots of time.
But, that happens, and you move on. I thought ASU played really good defense throughout the game, particularly off the ball.
