Arizona Desert Swarm offers the following analysis and prediction as to how the Arizona Wildcats will fare against the Beavers this season. There is optimism in Tucson for the Arizona women's basketball program based upon a 10-1 nonconference record and the offensive play of transfer (formerly at UW) point guard Aari McDonald (averaging 24.2 points and 6.3 board per game). However, the Swarm's bottom line prediction is two wins for the Beavers against the Wildcats this season. www.azdesertswarm.com/basketball/2018/12/28/18147234/arizona-women-basketball-pac-12-previewOregon State What’s their record and who have they played? The Beavers played the No. 70 schedule in the pre-season, going 9-2 on the way. They still have one game to go before starting Pac-12 play, but they have faced several major conference foes already. They went 1-1 against No. 25 South Carolina (a 70-68 win) and No. 2 Notre Dame (a 91-81 loss) in Vancouver, BC. Who are their top players? Redshirt sophomore Destiny Slocum is playing in her first Pac-12 season after transferring from Maryland. She’s leading the Beavers in scoring with 15 per game. She’s shooting 43.3% from outside. She aslo leads the team in assists with 5.4 per game. Mikayla Pivec is the team’s leading rebounder with 9.1 per game. She is second on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game on a 52.8% shooting percentage. What are their strengths? Oregon State has seven players who have taken at least 50 shots this season. They all shoot at least 41.3% from the field. In fact, 41.3% is the lowest shooting percentage on the team, with all eleven players who have taken a shot besting that percentage. They are first in the country in 3-point shooting percentage at 43.4%, and they are second at effective field goal with a percentage of 58.2%. They are top 10 in overall shooting percentage (49.8%), points per scoring attempt (1.19), and points per play (0.99). What are their rankings? Both the AP and the coaches have the Beavers at No. 11. They are No. 55 in the RPI. The Pac-12 coaches predicted that they would finish third in the conference. When do they play and how can you watch? Arizona will visit Gill Coliseum on Jan. 18 for a 8 p.m. MST tip-off. That game will not be televised or streamed, but you can listen to it and follow along on Arizona Live Stats. The Beavers will play in Tucson on Mar. 3 at 3 p.m. MST. That match-up will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks. What are Arizona’s chances? In January, Oregon State will be the second of three straight games the Wildcats play against teams with Final Four potential. The Wildcats lost by 40 and 25 points in the two games last season. The Beavers might be even better this year, especially with Slocum playing like she is. Don’t expect Arizona to take one off OSU. Prediction: 0-2

Oregon and Stanford the favorites, of course. The conference title could be decided at their game in Maples. I think OSU will be in that mix with ASU and Cal, so could finish 3rd, 4th, or 5th unless there are some surprise games in there (which often happens). It wouldn't surprise me to see this Beaver team drop more games in conference than has been the norm for the last several seasons.

I'm puzzled why people seem convinced that the Beav's have dropped out of contention for the Pac-12. Stanford lost their top two players from last year while OSU lost one, and granted it
was a really good one, but we also added a really good one in Destiny. The Beav's have lost top players year after year lately and keep staying on top. Why is this year supposed to be
different? It is tough only playing Stanford down there, but the Beav's have done it before and they can do it again. I agree that they need to keep developing, but with SR as their coach
I think they will. Oregon has no answer for Destiny and if she plays well I think the Beav's win. Stanford is hard to call because of injuries on their team, but I see it coming down to
their really good offensive rebounding against our really good defensive rebounding. To the victor the championship!

I think it will come down to how they play on the road. OSU hasn't played a true road game yet this season, and are 3-2 on neutral court games, so we'll just have to see. Hard to pick the Beavs in Eugene or in Maples, where they've won only once (2 OT's) before. Can they win at Cal, ASU, or sweep the LA schools on the road? Realtime projects OSU at 11-7 in league. I don't think they'll lose 7, but I see possibly dropping 4-5 road games even assuming they win all their home games.

I really can't see OSU dropping 7 conference games but let others think we will. The Beavs have made a history of proving them wrong.

I really hope you are right, believeinthebeavs. SR has done an amazing job year after year. There are a lot of dangerous teams this season, and I'm concerned about other Texas A&M type losses. Hopefully the girls learned from that game....and the Notre Dame and South Carolina games. However this season turns out, this is a fun team to watch, and I'll be rooting for them.

Reading too much into this is like listening to Portland media. We can talk 24/7 about it but the game will be played on the court. I still think this team will be neck and neck with Oregon for the P12 title. And even if not, so what, let's use the Pac12 season to warm up for NCAAs which is what really matters.
