Center by committee working so farOne of the biggest question marks entering the women’s basketball season for Oregon State was who would replace Marie Gulich in the post. While the No. 8-ranked Beavers (7-1) have yet to find one player to fill that void, they have been successful using a four-person committee through the first eight games into the season. And each brings something different to the position. Senior Joanna Grymek started the first two games, junior Janessa Thropay got the nod in the next four and junior Maddie Washington has started the last two. True freshman Patricia Morris has also seen some limited action in a reserve role.

Thanks for the link.
Collectively they are doing a really good job so far. Their combined stats are what would be acceptable for a good post player. It could be an advantage considering the number of fouls we could give and the fact that switching them up would help keep fresh legs out there. They have to be able to keep up with the blistering pace set by the guards and wings.

“Now I’m seeing our team adapt to them and learn to play with each of them in a unique way,” Rueck said. “With Jo on the floor, OK this is the pass you throw to her, this is the pass you throw to Maddie, this is the pass you throw to (Janessa), this is the pass you throw to Trish.
“It just takes time.” SR
Exactly.

They have to be able to keep up with the blistering pace set by the guards and wings. Except... if that's the stance you want to take we basically have no "backup". The four of them are averaging 15.2 pts and 12.5 reb. That's good for a starter, but not for a four-player rotation. Marie was 17.5 and 9.1 alone... other three 6.7 and 6.4. Stats rarely tell the whole story. The overall disparity doesn't seem huge except OSU doesn't have a respected "go to" post. Marie was half of the game planning for opponents. None of the current four are seen/respected as game changing threats. Without both and inside and outside threat opponent game planning becomes much easier and focused. OSU of 2017-18 was truly unique in the Pac12 and almost impossible to game plan against. You had to hope one aspect could be contained and the other faltered or didn't carry the team. The challenge for this team isn't that their not talented, just not as two dimensional and diverse.

I'm confused base, what would be good for a four-player rotation? And Janessa and Maddie essentially never played post last season, so adding their stat's to Marie's doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Yes... they basically both played inside whether the 4 or the 5. Neither has range outside 10' to be a stretch 4 like TC. So comparing 4 to 4 the stats are similar, yet the point? The stats the current four are substantially different because of the type of player/threat Marie was that none of the current are (three will never be). Hence, my take, in a much more blatant form... if you have 4 totaling the stats of one, you truly don't have much of an inside presence.

What we need from the position vacated by Marie, is defense, rebounding, and passing. If we get any offense, that is a bonus. It will be easier to judge if this rotation Rueck is using can be effective when we get into PAC-12 play, and our team is going against a legitimate front court of BIGS. Right now, all is progressing well. We are not as "diverse" in the middle as we were last year, but we are more "diverse" because Slocum is at the point, and Pivec is now playing at the wing. I'd say we are just as dangerous offensively as we were last year (maybe more so), but not as good defensively when our team plays against a team with talented front court.

I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - to learn that our post group is not as good as a First Round WNBA draft pick . . .
Oh, wait. In 2017 Marie averaged 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game (in 28 minutes). So our current rotation is right in the same statistical neighborhood. And IIRC, that 2017 team won a Pac-12 championship.
(2017 is a much better team for comparisons than 2018. Taya v. Kolbie/Bree, Destiny/Aleah v. Sydney, Mik/Kat v. Gabby, Katie v. Katie - the matchups are more comparable.)

Actually '17 was far superior in just the top three... all averaged about 7/5 with Marie at the top (25/20 if including MW as 4th). But, more importantly they were physical with great D/ footwork. TC isn't even in the discussion with this group. She's an outside/finesse player vs the discussion on inside presence.

One thing is that the differences in type and style of each of the four players will allow Scott to match up against the teams the beavs are playing. And conversely other teams will not have a clue as to what team they will face any given week.

And, defensively it's immobile or undersized... PM not really either but gets no time to even be in a scouting report yet.
