static.osubeavers.com/custompages/WBB/teamcume.htm?path=wbball&path=wbballLooking at the stat sheet couple of things jump out from an admittedly small sample set. Steals. Mik leads team with 12. Janessa second with 8. Destiny only 1. It seems that Rueck doesn't really put a high emphasis on steals. More on playing correct position defense and denying lanes. Mik is just has such great basketball IQ that she can get the steals without ever overplaying and getting out of position. Turnovers Destiny leads team with 19 (.13 TO/min) Kat, Mik, Katie, Taya and Janessa all tied for 2nd with 8. You'd expect the PG to have some turnovers just because of the amount of time the ball is in her hands. But I imagine that Rueck is still concerned about Destiny's turnover rate. At Maryland as a Fr she had 105 TO's in 1051 minutes (.1 TO/min). I'm sure the turnover rate will improve as she settles into her 2nd season of D1 WBB. By comparison, Sydney Wiese's career turnover rate was .088 (390 TO/4445 min) and she made her share of TO's.

Good insight and bless you for calling our games so far “OOC” instead of “pre season.”

SR has never cared about steals, he cares about Opponent FG%. So far that's 34.8%, which is right on track with last year's 35.0%. Comparing that to our own 48% shooting that's the equivalent of something like 5-10 "steals" per game.

1/5 of the season is in the books (6 games), and in my opinion, Mik is the MVP of the first six games, thought stat wise, she does have a bit of an advantage in that she has played over 7 minutes more per game than any other player.
Destiny and her teammates still have a little work to do to get accustomed to each other and that will help the TO number, but she will also be facing tougher opponents during the Pac 12 season. I would look for the biggest improvement from Destiny next season.

Comparing that to our own 48% shooting that's the equivalent of something like 5-10 "steals" per game. Agreed. As I understand it, his defensive philosophy is to have his players always in position to make the shots difficult for opposing players to make, as opposed to gambling for a steal (which is usually what you have to do - great when you guess right, often leads to a less difficult shot for the opponent if you find yourself out of position). . For example, Janessa, likely buoyed by her (great) 8 steal game earlier, went for a steal against a ND player in the 1st half that led to the ND player freely driving and getting a foul on TC. I would happily have traded that sequence for Janessa staying in front of her player, no steal attempt, and no foul on TC, who was having a really good game until the fouls derailed her.....NOTE - don't begrudge JT's effort, just picking out an example of where SR's philosophy can also pay dividends (we usually don't have as many fouls or as much foul trouble as our opponents)..... Note that while SR's players are racing up most all of the career milestone charts (blocks, rebounds, 3 ptrs, scoring, ...) they have not dented the career or season steals charts at OSU. Go Beavers!

What? You think it's strange to have a higher FG% than FT%? I bet that however upset you are about it Mik's waaaaay more upset about it. Aaaand that could be part of the problem. Fixing stuff like this during a season doesn't happen often.
