Last night was my first time watching the Beavs live this year.
Most of the earlier posts have been pretty much right-on in my view.
Here are a few of my personal observations on the game.
The Beavs shot poorly from 3, but all of the shots taken were from structured sets, all of them were good square-up shots. That's the good news. The bad is that the shots didn't drop. Rueck can live with this because the Beavs are loaded with proven shooters, and much of this year's offense is built around getting 3s for 5 good shooters. Kat was visibly frustrated because she could not get a shot to fall, and she didn't get enough floor time to believe she would be able to shoot her way thru a bad night...
Rueck was very disciplined in his half court expectations. Destiny & Mik (sometimes Katy) could breakdown the D off the dribble pretty much at will, but coach made them stick with running their offense even when the floor got muddled and congested. A less disciplined coach would have turned his superior athletes loose on a team that was visibly not as athletic as the Beavs.
The Beavs really struggled with their interior defence. The WKU post pretty much ate up the paint with a basic spin move into an in close bank shot. Vanessa and Jo both struggled to stop a low post player that Marie would have eaten for breakfast.
As far as the other power teams. ND & SC both have smooth, fast athletic guards who are impressive. ND didn't really break sweat against a pretty solid Gonzaga team. SC is athletically on a par with the Beavs and they are methodical and schooled in their half-court game. As someone posted earlier, the team that shoots best from 3 will probably win this one...
I was disappointed with the Beavs paint defense and I'd bet my hotel bill Rueck was to.
Jo definitely is faster up and down the court this year, and once in a while she shows flashes of positional quickness. But her defence remains limited because of her lack of foot and hand speed. She does not get from A to B quickly - the net effect being that she defends A, but not A & B - which is not good news against Top Pac-12 teams.
I am really looking forward to tonight's game. It will tell us a lot about how quick Destiny is against premier guard defenders, and it will also tell us how tough the paint defence is against better post players than what they struggled against last night.
GO BEAVS !!
