1922-2018. A creative genius, created the characters most of us grew up with.

When I was 13 or so, the movie "Heavy Metal" came out and I asked my Dad if I could go se it. My brother (18 at the time) was present and my Dad turned to him and asked him it was a movie appropriate for me.
I had just finished reading a Fantastic Four with Dr. Doom in it. As per usual, Dr. Doom gave a quasi-Shakespearean soliloquy in announcing to the Fantastic Four that he was, in layman's terms, going to kick their behind. So when my Dad turned to my brother to ask his advice, my immediate thought in my head was of Dr. Doom holding out a fist and saying to my Dad, "Foolish old man! You have sought out the wrong advice! Now I shall see Heavy Metal and you shall be none the wiser! Hahahahaha!!!"
My brother looked at my Dad, frowned, semi-closed his eyes, and shook his head no. It was over that quickly. The image in my head changed to Doctor Doom holding out a fist and pronouncing, "You have betrayed me for the last time, oh brother of mine!"
Stan Lee: connecting with kids for nearly 70 years. Great man.

It only appeared on premium cable for 10-15 years after release before legal rights were worked out to allow it on DVD. Have you ever seen the South Park episode inspired by 'Heavy Metal'?

I snuck into a theatre a week later and saw the movie. My brother was probably right; I probably wouldn't recommend a 13 year old seeing that movie. Since that day, I've seen a few midnight showings (including at the Whiteside in Corvallis in the late 80s).
Never saw the South Park episode.

Never saw the South Park episode. As a responsible adult, I would never recommend that movie for a 13-year-old. As a 13-year-old, I would definitely recommend that movie to another 13-year-old! One of my OSU roommates had recorded it off of HBO or Showtime in the '80s and it was a frequent midnight showing at our apartment in the early '90s. If you are a fan of the film, I would highly recommend the South Park episode, which is called " Major Boobage".
