My take on the team at this point from watching the game seatside.
Pivec- I expected more driving from her this game as she said she was going to skip track to work on it. But otherwise it was the same 'ol rebounding all out effort Mik.
Goodman- Her overconfidence of last year seems gone. She was taking her shot when it was there and once when the shot clock ran down she got herself open and took the shot herself. Seems to have been working on her rebounding.
Aquino- No action, but she seemed in good spirits.
Washington- Her play was more under control/self confident. Taking the open shot, rebounding/boxing out.
Taya- Taking up from where she was at at the end of last year, which was really good.
KTMac- She knows she needs to crank up the scoring and she did it this game. She looked to take the shot, and create the shot. Now keep it up Katie!!!
Jo- They were passing her the ball at the height and spot for her to score. We will see how this works against stiffer competition. Her rebounding was the same fierce force it was in the second half of last season. Her defense was a bit cautious. SR may want to make sure she stays in the game until they figure out a back up for her?
Thropay- The songbird was the most improved from last season. Scoring, defense, rebounding, passing, it was all improved. And her natural aggressiveness was still there but more under control.
Kat- Not starting is going to be hard on Kat. She seems to need some time to get comfortable in a game but they need her to be instant help. We will see if she can adjust to how things are. Top returning scorer and it doesn't seem like she's going to be starting, it's got to be tough.
Destiny- Rough start, but then she calmed down and it got better. I hope the team adjusts to her rocket passes better. When Destiny is out there you need to stay alert. I think all the preseason hype got her a little overexcited, so I'll wait for another game to see how it goes.
PM- She can keep track of what she's supposed to be doing out there just fine. Didn't seem nervous and recovered just fine from a defensive oopsie. It will take some time, but she has great potential.
Simmons- Not much court time, but pretty much what I expected. Good aware defense, keeps track of her player and of what is going on around her. She can drive just fine, we'll see how her shot develops.
Two years ago I thought the offense was the weakness at the beginning of the year, and last year it was the defense. This year I don't see any obvious weakness'. Tougher competition will sort things out.
It was fun!

If she gets enough playing time to become comfortable she could become a handful for even the most physical post players. I'm also hoping with her increased comfort will be demonstrated in her shot.

Definitely going to be a scary team when Destiny, Kat, Aleah, KtMac, Mik, etc. are hitting from deep. Looked like they were out there moving the ball really well and getting the open look often (granted the competition wasn’t top notch).
I do think it is going to be important to keep Kat super involved at all times. Definitely going to be tough going from a starter to sixth man, but she is as good an offensive threat as anyone when she’s on. We are going to be scary deep at all 3 guard positions this year.
The two freshman looked a little nervous. Who wouldn’t as a freshman though? Jazz wasn’t looking to score, but that is nothing I wouldn’t expect from a freshman in their first game. Trish looks like she can be great. Will take a little work but no doubt a reality. Hopefully we can morph her into something similar to Ruth. I was really excited to see Aquino play but sadly she didn’t.
Jo looked much better! She has implemented a nice power dribble drop stop. She has always seemed to have a soft touch. Problem will be if another player (like Marie) stretches her out because she seems vulnerable outside 3 feet or so. Regardless showed really good improvement which makes me happy! Janessa, while undersized, hopefully will give us an athletic-5 too for timed that we are going fast instead of big.

I liked what I saw from Jo and Janessa. Jo is slimmer and runs better. As noted, she learned the power-dribble move that every big needs. And she learned where to move in response to the play around her, instead of just posting up and making the ball-handler find her. She's also learning how to play team D. She's not senior-year Ruth Hamblin, but she's at least sophomore-year Ruth and probably better. Post won't be our strength this year, but we'll be fine inside.
But Jo also tires out and I think we'll need 10-15 good minutes from Janessa every game, and against some teams we'll need more. She is excited to be playing 100% healthy - which she has never been since she got here. She opened with a couple mistakes but quickly adjusted and played well. She is strong and seems to relish battling in the key. She also has long arms, which makes her play bigger than her 6'2" height. I think she'll play her role well.
I'm a little concerned for Ron Callan, because when Destiny is on the court the pace of everything jumps about three notches. I don't see how he'll be able to keep up doing the play-by-play. Expect to hear this a lot, "And Slocum brings the ball up the court AND STUFF HAPPENS AND WE SCORE!"
And Katie is the next in line. First it was Jamie who would will us to victory when the baskets were tough to get. Then it was Syd. Then Marie. This year, it will be Katie. She showed that sort of aggressiveness all game long.
As for the others, I just felt that everyone had a good off-season. All the returners played well - Kat and Mik didn't score much, but cleaned up the boards and did all the things that you're supposed to do when you're not getting your shot - and they looked to be in great physical shape. The freshmen didn't do much - they obviously are just starting to learn the system - but they looked fine while doing it.
In sum, it seems like everything is on track. Not a lot of surprises, and all the surprises were pleasant ones.

Also made it to the game. More commentary:
1. Kat not starting isn't any big deal. I think Rueck will change the starting lineup from game to game for awhile. Kat played a lot of minutes, looks great. Her defense, and defensive rebounding continues to improve. 2. Destiny Slocum is a game changer. Clearly she was excited to be on the court, and at times tried too hard, and had some turnovers as a result. But, this kid is amazing. OSU has never had a player of her caliber at the point--maybe never will. Rueck will get her to play her game, with a bit more control. All I can say is WOW! 3. KT Mac looks to be the star of this team. She didn't hesitate to take a shot when it was there--thank you lord! And, what a passer she is into the post. 4. Pivec is such a stud. What else can you say about her. So glad she is on our team. 5. Taya looks great. Still want to see her more aggressive under the hoop 6. I thought Maddie was awesome today. Glad to see her more aggressive with her shot. Maddie played solid defense, and rebounded. 7. Thropay played her hustle & aggressive self, and liked it. She and Maddie kept a lot balls alive during their minutes 8. Jo is improved. Still not sure about her defense and rebounding. She seems to have learned to shoot quicker after receiving the ball. 9. Aleah might be the best 3-point shooter on the team (I guess she was last year!). She can create her own shot, with that beautiful step back. She is going to have some monster games this year--I can feel it. 10. Not enough minutes to comment on the freshman, but looking forward to seeing them next Friday. 11. I wasn't impressed with our defense as much as I expected to be, and I'm sure Rueck will be focusing on defense in the practices this week. It will get much better.
My concerns remain in the post, when we have to go and a team like Baylor's front line. Good news is that we have time, and Rueck has depth this year. I really think Maddie Washington and Thropay are going to have to develop like Kolbie and Bre for us to have a deep run. It would be nice if Acquino and Morris also made great progress, but we'll see.
Destiny is a rocket powered dynamo, and, she is going to get Gill Coliseum rocking this year.

I was at the exhibition game at Gill yesterday and collected a box score sheet after the game.
My observations include that Slocum brings to the Beavs an attacking ballhandler for opposing defenses to have to game plan against. Slocum's debut was marked by lots of energy and enthusiasm, but also some seemingly careless turnovers against a Division 2 team. Slocum ended the game with 8 turnovers.
McWilliams looked solid and should be an effective scorer for the Beavs this season if she remains aggressive.
Slocum (3/10) and Tudor (2/10) were a combined 5/20 (20%) from beyond the arc. The good news is that the rest of the team was a combined 8/17 (47%) from distance. Slocum and Tudor are better shooters than they showed yesterday. Slocum was also 2/6 from the free throw line. The team shot 12/21 (57%) from the free throw line.
Grymek gave the team 15/4/2 (points/rebounds/blocked shots). She will be effective offensively if she keeps the ball high and stays active moving from block to block with her hands ready to catch a pass when Slocum, Pivec, and McWilliams attack the paint. The Beavers have a number of effective passers. Grymek will benefit from having several unselfish teammates.
Washington was effective with her jumper yesterday. She gave the team a spark with her enthusiasm, desire, and solid play.
Thropay hauled down 8 boards in only 12:18 of play. She likely would have played more but picked up 3 fouls during her limited time on the court.
Goodman can shoot (3/7 from beyond the arc). She has proven that and will extend defenses to the three-point line, opening the court for her teammates if she builds on her strong shooting performance as a freshman.
Here are the stats of note:
1) McWilliams scored 17 points on 7/12 shooting (3/6 from beyond the arc) to lead the team in scoring. She added 6 assists. 2) Slocum scored 12 points on 4/11 shooting from the field and 2/6 shooting from line. She led the team with 7 assists, but had 8 turnovers. 3) Pivec scored 9 points (4/8 shooting) and added 7 boards, 5 assists, 2 blocked shots, and 1 steal. 4) Corosdale scored 8 points (3/4 shooting) and added 8 boards and 2 assists. 5) Grymek scored 15 points (6/8 from the field and 3/6 from the line) and had 4 boards and 2 blocked shots. 6) Thropay grabbed 8 boards, scored 2 points, and added 1 assist. 7) Goodman scored 13 points on 4/8 shooting (3/7 from distance) and had 4 boards. 8) Tudor scored 8 points (on 2/10 shooting), grabbed 7 boards, and had 3 assists. 9) Washington scored 8 points (on 3/4 shooting) and grabbed 6 boards. 10) Simmons played 9:17 and scored 2 points and grabbed 1 rebound. 11) Morris played 5:16, grabbed 1 board, and had her only field goal attempt blocked. 12) Aquino looked good (solid shooting form) in warmups, but did not play.
A 66-second video of the Beavers highlights from yesterday is below.

We are going to be very, very tough to stop in games that Tudor, Slocum, Pivec, McWilliams, and Corosdale are all hitting. With Slocum and Pivec’s abilities to penetrate and score the ball off the bounce, teams are going to have to help out which will allow them to find either one of the other three on the perimeter or dish it off to Jo. If we can do a lot of that this year - we will be successful.
While Slocum did have 8 turnovers - many of them were careless or trying-to-do-too-much turnovers. I don’t think she will have turnovers from trying to get the ball up the floor the way we did at times last year against USC, UCLA, and some of the more athletic, pressuring teams in the PAC-12. Hopefully they were just jitters and are out of her system.

It reminds me of Syd and her threes. Destiny did have some turnovers at Maryland, it is a product of being a PG. I would expect her average to be somewhere around 3 turnovers per game.

Yes! How in the world could I forget about Aleah. Her stroke looked smooth as ever and she also would have racked up some nice assists, but they weren’t converting the threes. She had a plethora of sweet one handed passes. No one is better at just prying behind a screen and them pulling the trigger than she is. She is likely going to backup Destiny and maybe split time backing up Mik with Kat this season and she is going to do a darn good job in doing so. Anyone else think it was weird not seeing her with a braid?!

I can remember only two turnovers Slocum had as a result of the other teams effort. One other one might have been a travel or other unforced error. Anything else was the result of a phenomenal pass that either wasn't expected or couldn't be handled by the intended recipient. Those unforced errors will be corrected with practice and repetition, some will still happen, but the results when it goes right (and several did go right) will be awesome to behold. We are going to run this year! We are going to wear teams down just by trying to get our team enough touches! It is a good problem to have.

In terms of bench strength, I couldn’t be happier to see two veteran role players, Washington and Thropay, come into their own in their Junior season. Both bring some needed muscle, as well as smarts. Awesome bench for the 2019 season.
