A fascinating excerpt from an upcoming book: psmag.com/.amp/education/the-secret-betrayal-that-sealed-nikes-special-influence-over-the-university-of-oregonI already knew a lot of this and have never become completely numb to the lengths the ducks and Phil Knight went to build up duck athletics via Nike and vice versa. I didn't know, however, the sad, sad story of Dave Frohnmayer's daughters and the lengths that Knight went to to make sure he got what he wanted at uofo. A story like this should be news but we've mostly become numb to it all and it will slide off of Knight's and UofNike's Teflon skins. Some people wonder why I actively root against the ducks, as if I'm somehow at fault for disliking them and wanting them to fail. Rooting against your rival doesn't need a reason, but in this case there are reasons that go way beyond just normal sports rivalry. Those who somehow missed the time period described in this excerpt or who have decided that any complaints about it are just jealousy will never understand. That's not my fault. Every one of them should read this excerpt, if not the whole book. Mike '84

"When the 117,000-square-foot Moshofsky Center opened less than two years later, it made the University of Oregon the only school on the West Coast with its own indoor practice facility."
That must have been a surprise to Idaho and Idaho State, although I guess they aren't West Coast.
A lot of the same old BS about uo being the "flagship" university and a "prestigious research institution."
PK is a POS.

If WSU is "west coast" so is Moscow, ID (8 miles east of Pullman)

I'm assuming they meant "practice only" facility, not the actual football stadium.
If not, they also missed Northern Arizona, who also plays in a dome.

Mike '84 I linked this on Saturday already: in a nutshell Phil Knight withheld donations to the research fund for Franconi's Anemia at the very time Dave Frohnmayer's daughter was dying from the disease. Because Frohnmayer wouldn't tear up the University agreement with the worker's rights protest group. That's a scumbag move every day of the week and Phil Knight is never going to live that one down.

This book is 1) unfair to the people profiled, and 2) understates the damage actually done.
It is entirely likely that PK paid part of DF's salary and gave to his charity for unselfish reasons. It is patently unfair to automatically assume machiavellian intent simply because there is some benefit to the donor. The amounts involved are pocket-change to PK, and most likely he gave it no more thought than you or I putting a ten-spot in the Salvation Army kettle.
That said, the damage to the university is even worse for it being largely the product of well-meaning people. PK genuinely loves that school and believed that he was improving it in every way - when in fact he was eroding it from its core. The more love he showed, the more he (and DF) hollowed out the institution - corroding its principles, deflating its alumni community, and allowing its academic mission to get lost. It will take years for that school to heal all the wounds that Knight and Frohnmayer inflicted on it (and a leader of the caliber of Paul Risser, if such a man can be found today.)

If the Oregon voters hadn't sold out the university system and the school system in general by voting for Bill sizemore's illegally funded ballot measures that later found him going to jail for his part in the process, perhaps we wouldn't be having this conversation and this type of book. Oregon State came really close to becoming a 4-Digit student Institution with the massive cutbacks and falling enrollment. And is only maintaining and growing because of the flow of industrial money that is come into the school for research. very little of our budget actually comes from the state anymore and there was a time when students from Oregon didn't even have to pay tuition to attend Oregon State. now look what they have to pay and these are our kids and grandkids.

Because Frohnmayer wouldn't tear up the University agreement with the worker's rights protest group. That's a scumbag move every day of the week and Phil Knight is never going to live that one down. Knight is a hypocrite in addition to being a bully. He pulled his pledged $30 million “gift” from uo to force them to leave the WRC. Meanwhile he donates $105 million to Stanford who happens to be, wait for it...A FULL FLEDGED MEMBER OF WRC TO THIS DAY. Why is Stanford’s WRC membership peachy when uo’s is a personal insult? Simple, because Stanford with their $25 billion endowment can take his money or leave it. uo with less than $1B cannot. Every good bully knows who they can boss around and who they can’t. Knight is hypocrite punk and not a person to admire (assuming you’re not a sociopath). en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_Rights_ConsortiumAll Pac-12 schools are WRC member institutions except uo, UU, USC and OSU (we’re scared of the Beaverton bully too). 12 of the 14 “Big 10” Institutions are also WRC schools.

No tuition for instate students? When was that. Must have been at least 60+ years ago. My dad went to OSU in the mid 50’s and he paid tuition.

Due to OUS policy, essentilly written by Fronhmeyer as an out, it has been illegal for OUS schools to be members of the WRC since 2001, a point made quite clear in the story.
