Some of the comments from Scott Rueck:
* The tip-off dinner sold out in an astounding 3 days. * At the media day event, one person had asked every coach in the room where the toughest place to play was and every one of them said "Gill Coliseum". Scott gave big kudos to the fans for consistently having their back. * He said that the new score-board at Gill is "mind-blowing" and said that a locker room project is coming. There are new graphics in the practice facility which commemorate some of the big events of past years, including Marie becoming a WNBA player. * The goal of the team is to "win it all".. "the Final Four is what we want". * "This group has everything it takes to reach their potential"... "This teams' potential is extremely high". * He talked about the flag-football game on the beach during their recent team weekend. He apparently has had a coaches vs. team game every year for 23 years [hmm... I thought he didn't have any assistants at GFU? Was it one on ten?] and that the game this year was the most competitive. Jazz was trash talking the day before the game and both sides were going at it during the game. In the end, the coaches pulled out a one point victory. His point, of course, is that this is a VERY competitive team... probably the most competitive he's had.
They used the picture of Jazz at age 11 playing Australian Football and being rough with a male opponent (fore-arm to the chest... putting him on his heels). One person who came by our table before the speeches began said he had been to a practice and he told Jazz he had a nickname for her; she seemed a bit uncertain about how she felt about that but was pleased when he said it was "Wow factor". Apparently he was very impressed with Ms. Simmons.
All of the players were there and all appeared to be healthy. Let's hope they all can take the floor when the first game rolls around (as suggested in the Eggers article).

Thanks for the report.
I think it is going to be a really fun season to watch. For the last few years the team has grown tougher.

Maybe thickhead was right when he said Simmons was "Pivec on steroids" and that she has an ability to attack the basket and an aggressiveness unmatched by anyone else on our team (with the exception of Slocum). The addition of her and Slocum to last year's already highly competitive group of players, will assuredly (as Rueck said) make this his most competitive team ever.

No, I think my words are pretty much all about Simmons. If "so-and-so" had predicted great things from Simmons, then they would have read "Maybe so-and-so was right ...", but the general consensus here was that we shouldn't expect much out of her this year. I just like to think that she'll bring an extra something to the team that will help us against teams like Louisville and UConn. Simmons' athleticism, along with Slocum's, may give us the edge that we need to match up in those tough, physical games.

Is thickhead writing about thickhead in the third person? Like his posts or not, thickhead does add some color and controversy to this forum. A close-up (but a litle blurry) photo is below of the hand bling that was bestowed to the returning players last night.

I would assume that those are real diamonds in those rings, and I also hope that they sent one to Taylor Kalmer, too. She played a role, she played in the final game, and she worked hard. She deserves one.

We need Simmons to be "Gabby Hanson" on steroids. I'm not worried one iota about our offensive guard play being aggressive. We need defensive stoppers, that are in your face, and shut down opposing players. If Simmons brings that to OSU, Simmons will get on the floor early and often.

I'm sure you are correct, but I would bet that the anonymous practice observer (of now "wow factor" fame) quoted by beavsteve was referring solely to her defensive skills. If Mr. "Wow Factor" is visiting this forum, can you please elaborate, with details, on what excited you so?

OSU plays team defense and team offense. I said after the first time I saw a video of Jazz that I was thrilled with her defense, but she still needs to learn the defensive schemes that the Beav's run. She will have her turn to shine with the Beav's but give her a little time to learn what it's all about first.

A bit more of Scott's speech at the dinner. This isn't a perfect transcript, but it's close. It does have a few gaps.
“So what do we want this year? Katie said it. What did Katie say? She wants to win it all. You know where the final four is? Tampa. Of course, that’s what we want.
Not one person on the team came here to be five-hundred. They came here to be great. They came here to be elite. … we want to cut the last net. Who knows if that’s possible? You never know. But you’re going to do your best. I can’t tell you how many games we’re going to win, or anything like that, but I can tell you after working with this team for two weeks and a day now that this group has everything it takes to reach the potential. That’s what it has. And this teams’ potential is extremely high. And your expectations? Yeah, I know they are high. And that’s good. Ours are too. We’re going to continue to compete right every night and we’re going to continue to say “Why not us?”
He talked about wanting to impact as many people as possible.. fans, players, etc. Talks about how this team is very outwardly focused… helping others. Says it is very unusual for kids this age. Mentions the field trip day, reading to kids at the schools in Hawaii, etc.
The team is achieving, doing what they are supposed to do, in the classroom, on the court and off the court.
He talks about how they want to be elite again and says “What was this, the 10th day of practice, and I was all over them today! And it was fun [Laughter]. It was so fun they were saying “What the heck is up with him?” The first hour they were saying… “this sucks”, the next hour “this is a little better”, and the third hour they were having fun.” It ended with energy. We got better today. And it’s my job to make them uncomfortable…. But this team has so much potential that if we want to be great and if you want to be great you’ve got to continue to be uncomfortable. And we’ve got to keep coming back every day and those things are happening. And so we’re getting rid of our weaknesses, we’re building on our strengths, and we’re going to be great… were going to be great. I think we’ve got the pieces. I can tell you that if what I observed in our beach football game last week is any indication we’re going to have a fun season, because this team wanted to kill the coaches. ” It was clear they had “figured things out” and were thinking ahead”… “I had Jazz texting before the game last night talkin’ trash, kind of. And that was when I kind of new “somethings up”. They’re after us and then the game started and they were after us. They were talking trash. It was heated. And it was beautiful. I was enjoying every second of it. …. “I told them after they game, “Okay, you’ve got my respect. “ That was the greatest game I’ve ever been a part of and if we put that kind of energy into our games we’re going to kill everybody.”
“This is an amazing group. I can’t wait to get started with them. Our new people are doing phenomenal. It’s really neat to be able to recruit from Paraguay. Our first Paraguayan. Our first Australian. And it’s just really special. These are people who are what we are… they are coming in and they want to be great. I can’t wait to get to know them even more. “

I can't remember Coach being this bold in his public speaking. Mentioning the Final Four as a goal, perhaps even an expectation, tells me he is pretty damn hyped about this team....
Glad I got my Vancouver Showcase tix.....By the way, LOTS of good seats are still available... Where else you gonna see a possible showdown with South Carolina and Notre Dame in the same weekend?
GO BEAVS !!
