I was really surprised to see that Coach R selected Destiny to be one of the 2 team reps at Pac-12 media day. It obviously shows the remarkable confidence he has in her game and in her future.....
Coach is a loyalty guy. He acknowledges it and he honours it...That includes longevity in, and dedication to, the program. So to leave Pivec & Tudor & Corsdale at home in order to take Destiny strikes me as a very impressive gesture. Destiny has not started a game and yet Coach is willing to make her the face of the program. YOWSERS!! Looks to me like he is a believer.
Some takeaways for me from the Interview (other than the fact that none of the Media in attendance could ask a coherent question.)
(a) Katie Mac says her top personal goals for this season are to make the All Pac-12 Team, AND the Pac-12 Defensive team..That shows a mindset !!
(b) Coach R says the most important part of the team's evolution last season was their increased physical toughness...
(c) Coach R & Destiny both claim that Jo Grymek has made impressive strides since last season. We're all hopin' that's true.
(d) Coach R openly admits that he loves to coach tall posts - and that his system is pretty much based on having a good one.... Anyway, those are just a few quick reactions to the video...
GO BEAVS !!

The most impressive thing to me was the answer Destiny had for the dumas question about which 5 she would throw the ball to. Also liked the yellow/green chair comment. Class act by all
Proud to be a BEAV

Did you hear how excited, confident, Coach Rueck is about this team? It is clear, his expectations are sky high. "Elite Level" guards on this team. Those were his words. He clearly doesn't want to say anything about the incoming post players, or, even Jo. I think his confidence doesn't just come from his returning players. He is obviously excited about Destiny, but I sense he is excited about his post players. I also liked that he pointed out he has 4 guards with considerable point "1" experience, which he stated gives him flexibility to play Destiny at other positions. Never thought about that wrinkle.
Cannot wait, I think this season is going to be another special season for BEAVER NATION.

Some other comments:
- Katie Mac looks to be more buff (upper body strength), and seems to have this quiet determination about her that I think could be a harbinger to a breakout senior season. Can she be the next OSU WNBA pick with a monster senior season? - Physical toughness *is* the next step in the team's progression. As noted, we got better as the season went on, but even against USC, Tennessee and Baylor it still felt reactive. Does that physicality we have been inculcating become our calling card this year? - I don't know what the selection criteria was for Destiny being there instead of Pivec/Tudor/Corosdale, but perhaps it is because of how she conducted herself during last season, how she has (already) emerged as a leader, and how the staff see her becoming the face of the program. She also has pub from being National Freshman of the Year.....To me, Destiny has a presence about her. I may be projecting my wishful thinking, but it feels like she is a female Gary Payton just waiting to happen to the WBB program. - While many in this forum haven't been so high on Jo, I think the only compare was Marie, and given the season Marie had, that bar would be high even for some other top posts we have had in the past. I think Grymek is just plain different than Marie, and our team was completely built around Marie and her strengths. While we may still see Jo only 15-20 min per game, I suspect we will like what we see, especially as the team works with her strengths. Plus if (as SR indicated expectations of) the team starts out about where they left off last season by way of perimeter play, Jo might see a single, shorter defender all night. - I sure hope some potential recruits are watching the video and taking note. It seemed like we were mostly talking to some of the folks we are recruiting with this video...... - I think this team will really surprise. Mik not having to expend all her energy bringing the ball up. Kat becoming a slasher with a deadly outside stroke. Destiny providing the jitterbug quick guard that we have *never* had in Corvallis. KTMac presenting a mismatch. Being able to run experienced ball handler after ball handler out there....But most of all that culture that has just kept getting stronger from year to year...... - Not much mention of Janessa or Maddie - are they still a year away from a "Kolbie leap"? I would love for one of them to emerge as a factor, since if they wait too long, they might get surpassed by our incoming players (this year and next), our coach and his willingness to play freshmen, and the love of height putting multiple tall timber frosh out there instead....and that might be a wise investment regardless. - the Vancouver Showcase is becoming more intriguing by the minute. I think it will accelerate the process of improvement SR talked about - essentially it presents us with the growth opportunity the LA weekend did, but 8 weeks earlier......regardless of record, that acceleration could pay some serious dividends come tournament time. Can't wait for the season to start! Go Beavers!

Scott comes across as giddy. I don't think 'we expect to win every night' is just establish a frame of mind anymore.

(c) Coach R & Destiny both claim that Jo Grymek has made impressive strides since last season. We're all hopin' that's true. I also hope that Jo Grymek really has blossomed as suggested here. And I hope that includes FT shooting, since her FT percentage last year was abysmal. If she can't shoot FT's then it will be impossible to have her on the court in the waning minutes of a tight game, otherwise the other team will put their sacrificial hacker in the game and promptly get the ball back on every possession.

thickhead - - In general, a right on X & O observation...
However, unless Jo's improvement has been galactic, it's hard to envision Coach having her on the floor in the waning minutes of a tight game. The assets most valued in the closing moments of a tight game are those Jo possesses in least abundance.
If she is on the floor under such circumstances, that is unexpectedly great news for the Beavs.

Sooo, we need Jo out of close games because she can't shoot FT's. And she would have the ball in close games because the Beav's need her scoring? In those close games?? You guys need to make up your minds, is she a scoring machine and they will be funneling the ball to her but darn, she can't shoot FT's so she's a liability in late games. Or is she the worst player to ever put on a Beav uniform (which seems to be your thesis for the past year) in which case how is her presence or absence going to make any difference?? Decisions, decisions, make up your minds.

Interestingly enough, Grymek was a 55.3% FT shooter as a frosh, and 60.7% as a sophomore. Not stellar, but not dreadful, and certainly makes her struggles at the line as a junior a little bit perplexing. Well, borrowing from Berra, I'm sure FT shooting is 90% mental and the other half is physical. Hopefully Jo can correct the issue, be it mental or physical.
That said, I have high hopes given 1) SR doesn't need to oversell anyone, so if he says the strides she has made have been "impressive", then he must see something, 2) Grymek did very well in the JC ranks 3) she was the top rated JC post, which says something 4) we have developed some bigs over the past couple of years, why not Jo? 5) the intensity she showed last year tells me she is quite motivated, and a motivated player in our system usually contributes somewhere.....
Anyway, another month of attempting to watch football, and then we will start to have our answers.....
Go Beavers!

Are we really worried about Jo's FT%? She took all of NINETEEN attempts all season. FT's are about mental consistency, and it's hard to get into the right mental frame when you only get to the line twice a *month*.

Are we really worried about Jo's FT%? She took all of NINETEEN attempts all season. FT's are about mental consistency, and it's hard to get into the right mental frame when you only get to the line twice a *month*. Some people just have to find things to pick about. If Rueck says she is ready then he had earned my trust that she is ready. He seems to know what he is talking about. She didn't play enough to get comfortable. I saw enough positive things in her limited playing time to be hopeful for this season. When she caught the ball up high she kept it up there, both Ruth and Marie had issues with this. She plays defense with her arms straight up, doesn't lean into blocks. Her footwork is not the best but her predecessors started in a similar situation and both made significant improvements, the coaching staff knows how to address this problem. The best thing about her play is that she plays BIG, she takes up a lot of real estate under the basket. After seeing what this coaching staff has been able to do, I think it would be a good idea to wait until at least December to pass judgment on any of the players.
