Many times I've seen on the board comments about how someone is or isn't athletic and how we need more athleticism on the Basketball team.
I make no claims about my athletic abilities, but I've competed with, against and watched a number of world level athletes, including world champions. In all of those cases I think the first thing that comes to mind about them is that they were the first to gym (or similar) and the last to leave. Give me a gym rat any day over the natural athlete.
Basketball is about repetition and figuring out the mistakes and correcting them. Natural ability doesn't make you a great shooter, rebounder, defender, or passer. Natural abilities might help you after you've messed up, or getting down the court faster. But I prefer players that don't make mistakes that they need to recover from, and who figures out how to pass the ball so it gets up the court faster. Too many natural's figure that they've got it and don't need to put in the time. I think the James' and the Jordan's of the world mostly put in far more time in the gym than most of us could imagine doing.
