Lofty expectations.
I guess when you have one of the best defensive teams in the country and back it up with one of the best shooting teams people will notice.

A quick peak at the Athlon Sports '18-'19 Collegiate Basketball magazine at a local grocery store reveals the preseason women's "Magnificent Seven":
1) Notre Dame 2) Connecticut 3) Baylor 4) Oregon 5) Tennessee 6) Louisville 7) Oregon State
Very good company.....

Interesting that we played all but one of those teams last year, going 3-3.
UConn is clearly dodging us.

Very good company.....Seems like a mistake to me to list Tennessee so high given that they lost Mercedes Russell. And Baylor lost their star point guard, though Athlon probably didn't know that when they came up with their list. I would definitely move Louisville up to the #3 spot. OSU at #7 is highly speculative on Athlon's part given that our bigs are untested. Stanford probably needs to be up here, too, along with Mississippi State. And BTW, UConn's Coach Geno Auriemma is a pus-bucket.

And BTW, UConn's Coach Geno Auriemma is a pus-bucket. I failed to include in my post above that Stanford came in at #8 in the Athlon Sports preseason rankings, right behind the Beavs. Baylor has a very talented recruiting class coming in this season with the #3 (Aquire DeCosta), #7, #13, #20, and #29-ranked players in the country for the Class of 2018. I wouldn't move them from their #3 preseason ranking. The #20-ranked player (Honesty Scott-Grayston) is a 5'10" point guard who may end up starting for Baylor before its conference season arrives. As for Louisville, losing 6'2" Myisha Hines-Allen to graduation and the WNBA is a significant loss. There was simply no one quite like Hines-Allen in the country last year with respect to physical strength and fit for the Louisville system. The Cards will miss her toughness and rebounding in their line-up. I remember seeing her during warmups in Lexington and wondering who physically could match up with her among the Beavs and the other remaining teams in the Elite Eight. I agree that #7 ranking for Oregon State is speculative. But... I certainly welcome that high of an initial preseason ranking for the Beavs as confirmation that women's basketball experts and numerous others now know where Corvallis is on the women's collegiate basketball map. www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/rankings/_/class/2018

Tennessee in the top 10 is a joke. Sorry, but on that basis of where Tennessee is ranked, Athlon Sports rankings are not credible.

SEC 6th Woman of the Year Anastasia Hayes was kicked off of Tenessee’s team too. She scored some buckets on us toward the end of the game. Sure they always bring in a nice recruting class, but Evina and the rest of their team is not a top 10 team.
I think Mississippi State would give us a tough time. 6-7 Teaira McCowan would be a huge test for our bigs. She tore apart Louisville who gave us some big troubles in the Elite 8.
Can the season come any slower?! GO BEAVS!

Too bad. I'm sure they're real charmers just like Anastasia. Would have been a great fit for Holly Warpath. Um, Warlick. After losing to OSU

For those who want to know, as well as for those who look forward to second guessing and/or dismissing the Athlon Sports rankings, below is the official Top 25 from that preseason publication. The PAC-12 weighs in with 20% of the Top 25 with five of its teams ranked at #4, #7, #8, #19, and #23, respectively. 1) Notre Dame 2) UConn 3) Baylor 4) Oregon 5) Tennessee 6) Louisville 7) Oregon State 8) Stanford 9) Georgia 10) Marquette 11) North Carolina State 12) Iowa 13) Texas 14) Mississippi State 15) Syracuse 16) South Carolina 17) Maryland 18) DePaul 19) Arizona State 20) Minnesota 21) Missouri 22) Miami (Florida) 23) California 24) Nebraska 25) Texas A&M

I think it's a big deal that UConn is not the overwhelming favorite to win another title, which has been the norm in what seems forever. There's now a realistic shot at a half-dozen teams to win it all. It's tough for a top recruit historically to go against an almost gauranteed title by going to UConn (and meaning almost a guaranteed non-title anywhere else) to now a realistic shot in a variety of top-tier programs. OSU can now offer a) at least a plausible shot at a title during a recruit's time here AND b) an enjoyable experience (which I don't get the impression is the case at some of the other top programs). This change will make NCAA Women's basketball a lot more interesting overall.

I agree with that; it is a definite big deal for the rest of the top programs (including, of course, us) that UConn isn't the automatic pick to win it all, and, indeed, hasn't done so for 2 years and counting. This is the point I was trying to make when much was being written about Van Lith almost certainly going there. Another solid year and deep tournament run by the Beavs, another extremely successful tournament for the PAC 12 as a whole. and more and more of the top talent will be looking at west coast schools. Van Lith doesn't need to go 2,600 miles to play for a legitimate contender for the national championship. There are ample opportunities very close to home.
