I live in the future. Oh, I can enjoy the here and now, but I always want to know what the future looks like. It's this hope of how good things could become that peaked my interest in recruiting years ago.....before some of you were born.
I followed Men's basketball recruiting during the Ralph Miller era. I remember when the Orange Express began to catch the attention of players around the country. Players like Bryon Irvin, Jeff Grayer, and Freddie Banks were highly sought while all being high on the Beavs. Unfortunately, the fear of probation hung over the program's head for over a year, due to players selling tickets and some other violations, and as Ralph Miller retired, the OSU team didn't get the attention of many of the big stars. Stars like Gary Payton did arrive on campus, and other pickups like Scott Haskin joined the program, but most of the other "name" recruits looked elsewhere.
It wasn't easy following recruiting in those days. I paid for a subscription to Van Colemans Superstars, which would send out newsletters with recruiting information every few weeks, and when I had to have the absolute latest recruiting information, I would call Bob Gibbons All Star hotline. Yes, it was an 800 number, and you had to pay through your teeth to listen to recorded recruiting information. I was young and poor, and it was expensive, but I couldn't resist. There was no internet, no web service, no Rivals, or Scout, or Espn to supply the information.
Beaver basketball (and recruiting) went downhill, but Football began to arise in the early days of recruiting web sites. I joined the very beginnings of what were later to become Rivals and Scout, and I was able to continue my "living in the future.
Womens Basketball recruiting has never been as easy to follow. Services have begun to catch on, and social media, twitter in particular have helped, but information isn't easily handed to you. I've actually just started my journey into womens basketball recruiting. I can say, I have found it fasinating trying to figure out who the Beavers are interested in, and who is intereted in the Beavers. Did you know Kennedy Brown has a little sister who is already drawing attention? Kennedy's sister Addy will be a 2023 graduate and yes, Katie Baker is following her on twitter, and Addy is following Katie.
I think we should all be encouraged by how Scott Rueck and this Oregon State program is catching the attention of High School girls across the country. While looking at next years class (2020), there are four girls that I would call consensus top 10 recruits, that are all following Beaver coaches (Cameron Brink, Catin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Shash Goforth) and of course a fifth, Hailey Van Lith, has interest in the Beavs as well. There may be others in the top 10 that have interest as well, I just haven't had time to check.
My question becomes, do any of you have any favorite sites, or tricks, in finding information on Beaver recruiting? Of course there is Hoop Gurlz/Espn, Prospects Nation, and I'm following most all the big names in girls recruiting on twitter, but I'm not yet paying for any service. Do any of you pay for a service, and is it worth it? I've gained a ton of information just by following the AAU circuit this summer (this month in particular), and all the tournaments that are going on. You get a lot of opinions by paying attention to twitter, but as I said, I tend to live in the future, so I enjoy gathering information.
