I had the opportunity to run across Andrea Aquino, Patricia Morris and Jazz Simmons this morning, and talked with them briefly. Really nice young women, although Jazz did most of the talking among them. I knew that Andrea and Patricia were tall, but they really are TALL! They are excited to get going in Corvallis and are doing early coursework this summer. I spoke with one member of the staff working with the team a little while after meeting the players, and they are stoked about this group of newcomers.
Everyone affiliated with our women’s team are ecstatic about having Destiny moving forward. They feel that she is on another level and said that she just embarrasses the guys that SR recruits on campus to push them to become tougher and better like no other player that we’ve had. The rants about Destiny and early impressions of Jazz in particular got me really excited for the upcoming season and the infusion of talent, versatility and leadership.

Does this mean that thickhead will be proven correct when he predicted that Jazz Simmons will be a standout in her first year, and that all his naysayers on this board will be proven wrong? And that anyone who thought for half a second that Destiny would not be our starting PG is addled? It sounds like Jazz ("did most of the talking" and "early impressions" comments) could be this team's leader in the near future if Destiny doesn't assume the role. And thanks for your insights beavadelic. It's frustrating that there's so little info about the new players and we're still a couple months away from the start of practice. We know Destiny is a game-changer, but Jazz, Andrea, and Patricia are still big unknowns until we hear more opinions about them from coaches, players, or interested fans regarding their performance in practice with our veterans.

I think that Thickhead is onto something regarding Jazz. Obviously, the real test won’t come until they play top 20 competition, but she certainly has created a buzz. As for Destiny, SR has earned so much trust in Beaver Nation that if he didn’t have her in the starting lineup for game 1, I’d consider that there had to be a logical reason. It’s just that I can’t fathom what that reason might be short of unknown medical reasons. By all accounts around the team, she is a remarkable talent and leader, and we’ve had the benefit of having her in practice for a year now to see how she meshes with the team and what she brings to them on court. She’s a game-changer for sure!

The rants about Destiny and early impressions of Jazz in particular got me really excited for the upcoming season and the infusion of talent, versatility and leadership. It indeed is a magical time for the new players as they attempt to find their way on the court and in their summer course(s) in Corvallis. I likewise look forward to watching how this new mix of players for the '18-'19 season will develop. Destiny Slocum will provide the team with another player who can penetrate and create shots for her teammates. She will start at the point, absent some unanticipated events taking place between now and early November. However, I again caution all of the fans to give both Destiny and Jazz a chance to learn what it takes to play within Coach Rueck's system, especially on the defensive end. I saw Destiny play a number of times last season in open practices against the practice team that was comprised of male athletes, most of whom were likely solid high school players. Slocum did not embarrass any of those males in the open practices/scrimmages that I saw. Those male practice players were all quicker, taller, and stronger than Slocum. The legend of Destiny Slocum is growing. Common sense tells us that she will experience her own struggles as she attempts to contribute to the continued rise of the Beavers WBB program during her first season of competing against PAC-12 competition. Despite Slocum's award-winning freshman success at Maryland, she shot only 40.6% from the field, 66.3% from the free throw line, and averaged 3.1 turnovers per game in '16-'17 for a 32-3 team that had significant talent on its roster. The returning Beavers have shown that they have plenty of quality outside shooting, so Slocum's greatest value during the '18-'19 season may be simply getting quality shots for her teammates. herosports.com/colleges/sports/womens-basketball/destiny-slocum-stats

bhf has a really good point here. If DS were consistently embarrassing the guys on the scrimmage team then the coaching staff needs to find better players.
Personally I place a lot more credit on bhf's observations.

Retweet yes Like no… 2:21 PM - 20 Jul 2018Speaking on behalf of the guys that SR recruits to challenge the ladies, I don't think they are allowed to jump and block the ladies' shots. The typical young man's jumping advantage is thus taken from him.

Personally I place a lot more credit on bhf's observations. I read the original as "Everyone affiliated with our women’s team are ecstatic about having Destiny moving forward. They feel that she is on another level and said that she just embarrasses the guys that SR recruits on campus to push them to become tougher and better like no other player that we’ve had." So the focus was on the team not the scrimmage team (i stand to be corrected btw). But I have spoken to a coach who pretty much agrees that DS is next level and pushes the team like he has never seen. Just can't wait to see her on the floor freeing up MP which i think is a huge bonus and is going to be great to watch.

Thanks for the quote, I could always use a good laugh.

I do think a WNBA team would beat any HS team . . . if they had time to prepare and practice for them. They would have to make a lot of adjustments.
I took the statement about DS as meaning, "the boys have to step up their game to properly challenge her", not, "the boys can't stay on the floor with her."

I do think a WNBA team would beat any HS team . . . if they had time to prepare and practice for them. They would have to make a lot of adjustments. You are in lala land. Wasn't Alfred Hollins on a HS team with Deondre Ayton? So to say "any HS team" is nuts. A really good HS team would beat a team made of the best women's players of all time, hands down. The women would be lucky to get the ball across half court and would be lucky to get a shot off without it being blocked. Those "boys" have HUGE vertical leaps compared to girls, even compared to the top WNBA players. These "boys" are typically 3 times stronger in the upper body than women, and almost without exception are faster and quicker. Lateral motion, passing, you name it, are superior just due to raw strength. On a better than average boys HS team from a big school in California, virtually all the starters can dunk the ball handily. But it's DEFENSE that makes the difference here. Defense would shut down the top female players. Absolutely. Maybe you don't understand how "unfair" an advantage a man's testosterone really is. It's huge.

That’s interesting re: the observation of Destiny, because the staff person I talked to watched her every day. Oh well, everybody has there own perspective.

Nobody said Slocum is coming off the bench in any of the discussions here. If you can find such information, please point it out. It is making something out of nothing. The closest you would find is my statement that she would be 2nd or 3rd least likely to come off the bench in the coming season. I am sorry if this confuses people, but it does mean she will be among the starters.
