This is a difficult assignment because we have so little data to work with.
Jo did not get much floor time this season, and when she was on the floor she was never the focus of the offense.
Starting points: Jo is a solid 6'8 and exerts a defensive presence in her immediate area of the court. Her overall game is solid but not polished. Her floor speed is not great, but pretty good for a woman her size.
In the limited time that I have watched her this season her demonstrated strengths are rebounding, setting screens, scoring in close when she receives a well-delivered pass, and serving as a tall wall in the paint.
Numerous aspects of her big-woman skill set need quite a bit of improvement. She does not have the soft hands nor the quick passing skills required of post players in the OSU system. If she has a shot from beyond 8 feet Coach did not let her show it. I can't describe what I haven't seen, but I will be surprised if she has much of a shot repertoire this upcoming season.
Her greatest asset is size and she has it. In the 7-8 foot radius around the basket she poses problems. She can block shots, plug driving lanes, and, importantly, she can intimidate opponents with the threat of REJECT.
The upcoming season: I can see Jo getting 10 - 12 minutes per game, but 4 - 6 is equally possible. This will depend on how good AA & PM are when December rolls around. Many on this board have speculated that it will take both of them much of their 1st year to develop physically and to learn the OSU system. This makes sense to me. If true, Jo's floor time will move upwards toward 15 minutes.
Another thing to consider is that the 2018-19 team is loaded with talented, experienced shooters so it is possible to field a team where Jo is the big presence in the middle, but not relied on for scoring, or for other responsibilities beyond her skill set. She would be asked to rebound, screen, score in-close, and be the beast on defense.
Another thing to consider is that Jo just might improve in so many ways during the off season that she grows into a more complete player than she was this past season. I think several people on this board are of this opinion. I hope they are right. I don't expect it, but I'd love to see it.
Bottom line: I don't envision Jo getting a lot of floor time this season. Her physical presence is not imposing enough to offset her limited passing and scoring skills.
It is also possible that Jo will provide the mentorship, and the physical toughness, to accelerate the growth and improve the progress of AA & PM - the two Frosh she will be bouncing around the paint in practice everyday. This would allow Jo's impact to be seen for years to come in Gill
GO BEAVS !!
