What Adley did in the CWS is legendary, and he will be remembered by all of us for a long time for it. He was the best player out there (co-best with Abel on my ballot), which is very impressive considering the quality of all the other players out there and the pressure of that enviironment (the real differentiator imho). His performance proves he is more than a great player, he is a winner. That will take him far. Greatest of all time? To baseba11111111’s point, with so many variables and ways to measure, no one will ever agree even after his career is over, so to speculate before...yeah, good luck. Fun conversation though.
For me, if Adley and Abel can find a way to lead next year’s team back to Omaha, that will take them from CWS legends, to career legends. They would join an elite few for sure.

This great Karnak says that after Adley hits .350+, 15 home runs, drives in 80+ and manages the staff that returns the Beavs to a 3.00 era and a deep run in the playoffs, he will be 1/1 in the draft. That will put him top all time - but I am only an armchair prognosticator that slept at a Holiday Inn Express full of little league players in for a Babe Ruth tournament (that part actually happened, tornado warning and all).

What a player. He positively impacts every game he plays in, have to wonder where his ceiling is. With him controlling the defense from behind plate and our returning pitching staff, I think we will be competitive next year. I think that competitive is a given. With him on the roster period, a returning stable of emerging pitchers and plenty of talented kids in our “next man up” system, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll have a chance to be real good again. It would be a stretch to expect anything rivaling 56-6 and final four finish or 55-12-1 and a National title, but we could have everyone back and not be assured of approaching either of those accomplishments.

Adley will be the best OSU baseball player (to date), and the best pro of any OSU player (to date), throwing out injury, other distractions. Book it.

I tend to agree with Lotrader. And yes, his numbers may go down next year - it would be pretty insane to even keep them the same. That said, this year was his first year focusing only on baseball, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him improve on his numbers. But what I suspect will happen is that he will improve incrementally, and the numbers may not show it. He just seems to have the right combination of attention to detail, physical gifts and charisma to have an unlimited ceiling. The expectations on him now are well out of control, but then again, he's given no reason to temper them. I mean, the press he's getting is just warming up. One thing to add to the discussion: Playing MLB is super difficult--Even the worst guy sitting on the end of the bench on the worst team (looking at you Orioles...) is a great baseball player who was good enough AND lucky enough to get there. Plenty of high draft picks bomb out, and a surprising number of lower draft picks make it. Add to that the vagaries of playing catcher, and it is a challenging proposition to be the best player at OSU ever, let alone making it to the majors.
I say let's just enjoy watching him play and leave it at that.

Ungh... Adley had a freshman year... still wasn’t that bad. Helluva a catcher. Sophomore year is better then any prior Beav. Look at the numbers. And he continues to do it in summer. Let’s see his Jr. year. Then we can have this debate and 2111 can tell us why he’s not the best Beav ever. BTW... Adley has a grizzly bear rug at home...... it isn’t dead.... it’s just afraid to move

No disrespect to Madrigal, Conforto, or Ellsbury, but Adley will go down as best baseball player to wear an OSU jersey... When the Casey era is over, that is going to be a very elite list of players. And Rutschman's name will be toward the top.

I love me some Jacoby, Darwin, Kong...... and Nick....... Adley is better. We all have opinions and that's cool, but Kong was better and the best player his first 2 years @ OSU. Adley will be in a whole new "world" next year As a freshman in 2012, Conforto hit .349/.437/.601 w/13 home runs and 76 runs batted in 58 games. He was named Freshman Hitter of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. USA Baseball National Team. Sophomore in 2013, Conforto hit .328/.447/.526 w/11 home runs and 47 RBI in 65 games. College World Series, he went 7 for 16 and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Pac-12 Player of the Year and was named a first-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) USA Baseball National Team Preseason Sporting News College Baseball Player of the Year for 2014 Adley ended the year with a bang, but Conforto was better surrounded by less from day 1.

Which sucks for Conforto, but is an example of recency bias in this conversation. The tread is about Adley being the best beaver to ever put on the uniform. Could he be? maybe, but he has a ways to go. A historic run at the CWS is amazing, but it does not define a career. Conforto has a better comparative overall career. But it doesn't mean Adley won't have a great one. It doesn't mean he won't pick up where he left off. It doesn't mean he won't be even better. He has every opportunity to be a very high first round pick. I kind of doubt he will ever be the #1 pick... Joe Mauer was the last catch chosen #1 overall back in 2001. But I can see him securing a top 5 selection. He is a very talented kid and a great catching prospect.

How soon we forget the great talent from the past....Jacoby was a 4 tool guy who proved that he could hit for power when he got to the bigs - hit for higher average, so fast, and he could dunk it from the foul line - and then you have to go back down through the years. Adley is the latest, may be one of the greatest ever when all is said and done, but there have been great Beavers all through the decades.
