Hope we beat him and the rest of the slugs at that hole! Other than that wish him the best with his liberal arts degree and future McDonalds employment.

Shocker! The day that OSU has a blue-chipper choose us over the bigger names in a remotely high profile announcement I may pass out. If it happens AND the guy qualifies and actually makes it on the field as a Beaver star my heart may not be able to handle it. Lower profile just has to be our MO, and we have to have a staff that molds potential into performance. I should know better than to get my hopes up with players that everyone wants, but I bite every stinking time.

Questions for the group: IF OSU had the facilities that hole has, would THAT make the difference? IS the BLING the only reason kids chose them over OSU? Would our recruiting woes (if that's what they are) continue if Nick Saban were the coach.... WITH our present facilities? Thanks to those that take the time.

It's a bit like the chicken and the egg. My thought is 17-year-olds want to go where they will win and play at the highest level they can. I think the facilities are down the list. I'll qualify that - once you have good facilities, gold-plated facilities don't add that much. I'm not an expert, but I think ours are good. So a kid choosing between Boise and Corvallis will think he'll win more in Boise but play lesser football. If that's about a trade-off, he's going to think about the school and towns themselves. If we put together seasons of 5, 7, 8 and 8 wins together, we will recruit better. If we get a double digit win season or two, we'll sometimes beat out UCLA and UW for kids. There are exceptions, ie a player whose parent graduated here or just someone who truly believes in JSmith. If Smith gets a few of those guys, teaches well, and catches a break, we will be bowling again and things will look much better. So I think an upgrade in facilities will have a minimal effect.

You could've just put that in the title so we wouldn't have to waste time opening it.

Wouldn't make a bit of difference to have equivalent facilities. No. Let me put it this way. Wisconsin has a stadium that seats over 80,000, is in a great college town, and their football facilities are excellent. They are also one of the most successful college football programs over the past 30 years, I believe top 10 for wins maybe even top 5. BUT......they run a clean program and hence rarely crack the top 25 in recruiting if ever. They just finished a 13 win season and their recruiting class is ranked 40th. Folks college football recruiting has been a dirty game for as long as I can remember and it's well documented. Programs located in the middle of talent rich areas like Florida, Bama, and Texas, still cut corners to win recruits. When a school located nowhere near a talent center starts putting together top 20 classes consistently and plays in a relatively small stadium compared to other top 25 programs...well draw your own conclusions, but the history of recruiting is pretty clear cut.

As many of us have been Beaver fans for years, even decades, it's easy to overlook that these 17 year old kids have only ever known the ucks as a powerhouse, nationally relevant program. They've seen them on TV every weekend, on Gameday, all over ESPN highlights. In their mind, Oregon is an elite program. Throw in the Nike connection and some good recruiters like KHJ and Cristobal and they're going to get top kids.
The true determination of their future success is whether or not their staff can coach these kids up. Blue chip recruits only take you so far (see Texas).

Crocker is currently 19 and not 17. I still agree with the assessment as it is generally true even down to the generalized age.
