I could not be happier if this comes to pass! MR is a wealth of knowledge, and understands what it takes to win in Corvallis. We all had our issues with his clock management, ect. But at the end of the day, under his leadership, we have had our best years of football. In addition, it takes a man of humility to come back to a school where he was the HC for many, many years and say " I am here to help JS in any way I can!" MR is a great addition to our staff. I believe he and JS will begin to develop QBs again and OSU will have QBS chasing PAC 12 records again. As well as playing on Sundays! GO BEAVS! He wasn't the coach in 2000, as far as I recall. I believe he said best years, not best year.

Let's hope not. We can do better. Mike Riley is not a good football coach. 3 currently playing in the NFL quarterbacks disagree with you.

Pathetic if true, unless you are an old timer who keeps forgetting he QUIT on OSU multiple times... He never quit on OSU. He left for better opportunities. Huge difference between a quitter and someone who puts in a great deal of effort and moves on to a “better” opportunity. The opportunities didn’t work out for him, but I’d bet any employers Riley has ever had would take him back at some level without reservation. Nobody who does their job to the best of their abilities and moves on to greater opportunities should be considered a quitter. Some “fans” apparently quit from time to time though.

According to Wikipedia: Riley's first contract at OSU was 5 years/$185K per year San Diego gave him five years at $750K per year, an increase of over 400% After being fired by San Diego, he returned to OSU for $625K per year....by the time he left, he was making approximately $1.5M a year He then "quit" and went to Nebraska for $2.7 million a raise of 80%.
Put this in perspective. You're working at a place you love, and it pays you $50K a year. Some other place offers you $200K a year to do roughly the same job. You don't like it as much, but holy hell that's a lot of money. Things don't work out though, and you're fired. Sucks, but hey you've got a good chunk of change saved up now. All of a sudden, that place you loved working calls....they want you back, for about $150K, which is still three times what you were making four years ago. So you go back, and things are great for a good ten years, and you earn raises up to around $450K. But, as most things do after a decade, they start to feel routine and the enthusiasm everyone had is gone. Here comes another job offer...a flashy company with a devoted customer base and a lot of perks....and they're offering you $730K.
This is just putting it in perspective. A guy making $50K a year in 1997 has an opportunity to make $730K a year and he's not going to take it? This doesn't even take into account the fact that the guy was offered how many jobs that he turned down? USC twice, Alabama once, who knows what else was offered to him....and you're going to talk about the guys loyalty? That's insane.
I also am hesistant about dipping into the Riley well one too many times, but if he were any other coach with 17 years of FBS head coaching experience with a lifetime record of 112-99 and was 7-2 in bowl games in the Pac-12 and Big Ten who had coached at least five QBs who went on to the NFL and oh by the way was also a head coach in the NFL for a few seasons in addition to coaching two Canadian league champions and was also the offensive coordinator at USC under John Robinson and he was rumored to be OUR QUARTERBACKS COACH you all would be doing f-ing backflips for joy.

I feel like I am in the same boat as you, in that the fact that it is Mike Riley is really the only worrying thing, and not really because of him. We still have players on the team that he recruited. How things are handled when a player disagrees with how he is being used on offense and goes and brings it up to MR, or if there are issues in the staff, is really the big question. I have no doubt that MR will do his best to handle those sorts of things, if hired, but they can be hard dynamics to manage for any staff.

Yeah, the people who are angry he could be our QB coach are just plain nuts. He’s got three QBs sitting on NFL rosters right now, plus a very laudable coaching resume... there’s only so many people who bring that to the table in the coaching profession, and to have one of them actually want to be a QB coach just about anywhere is pretty much unheard of.

He's not going to Fresno State, Iowa State, Florida, or back to Nebraska he's coming to OSU. " We excited fothe Vegas Bowl baby" -Willie I'm outta here Taggert

"High output. Low ego."
That's what JS said he was looking for. Seems like a pretty good description of Mike Riley.

Pathetic if true, unless you are an old timer who keeps forgetting he QUIT on OSU multiple times... Osulax24.... again love your passion for all things BEAVS and your opinions on this board. But honestly....quit? He got a NFL HEAD JOB. There only 32 of those and if you were in a profession and someone wanted to hire you and basically said....I think you are one of the 32 best out there... wouldn't you? Nebraska comes calling? I for one, would answer those phone calls. And I'm not an old timer either. Again, he isn't the head guy here. Coach Riley is a well respected football teacher & would be a great asset to anyone's staff. Again gang....let's move forward and SUPPORT Coach Smith on any hires of HIS staff! All of this on this board are passionate about OSU football & we all can help change negativity that had crept into this program fans, alumini & on this board. I for one say....it's a great day to be a Beaver!

Looks like DE is also in if my photo shopping is accurate. What about Bear Bryant? Elvis? Maybe not Elvis...he has no experience and is too fat. But maybe Jerry Glanville and we can leave duckets at every game for Elvis to attend.

For some more perspective... While it may be rarer in the Sports / coaching world, let me point out that this happens all the time in the corporate and engineering world... A guy works for 25,30,35 years, toiling away, working his way up the ladder, grinding his way through the 50-60 hour weeks. Pretty soon he is CTO, or some such title, has probably jumped companies a time or two, but in the same industry and he has reached (or passed) his ceiling, and he is running out of energy / almost ready to retire / has maybe slipped a bit or can't keep up with the younger folks, yet isn't ready to just sit in a Lazy boy all day. Those guys are a WEALTH of knowledge and companies (yes even former ones) line up for miles to hire them as Fellows or Consultants, usually at 6 figure salaries or $500 an hour... I remember one guy in a former company I worked at, was around 75, and was almost like a sage, he only worked 15-20 hours a week, had no project, had no deliverables just had meetings where he consulted and advised younger engineers... He was booked out at least a month, and it was rumored that if you went and sat with him for an hour and were an astute listener he would probably drop 3 patentable ideas on you... Point is, he was worth every penny and was a huge asset to the company, as Mike Riley will be for this football team
