I'm wondering if Smith felt obligated?! Not excited about him being an official asst on the staff. Just my opinion.
Go Beavs!

Seems to me if MR is on board it would be very hard to find a better person to meet the Parents of a kid that wants a real education and a shot at the next level than Mike Riley. A fine person and Representative for OSU and Smith's new Program.

Hip Hip Hooray. All is golden in Corvallis now. Mike certainly helped bring our program up to a completive level (at times) some time ago before he guided us into the tank. Hell, Banker is sniffing around Corvallis, bring him in to. Heck, he's such a great coach why didn't we make him the Head coach rather than JS? Mike still thought he was the best coach for Nebraska after their worst season in half a century, so he certainly thinks highly of his abilities. If true, I look forward to more delay of game penalties and that pro style offense that's works well at schools with 2 layers of 5 star recruits that can push any O or D line around in the country. Our new OC can be looking over his shoulders while Riley lovers push for his ouster when things don't go well early as he tries to establish himself. Now we just need a stature on the old side of Reser in honor of Mike and all will be golden. Life is good I understand the fatigue about Mike Riley. I understand wanting a fresh set of coaches who by virtue of their being new to Corvallis or at least being younger will bring innovation and enthusiasm. But if you have ever had the chance to watch Mike Riley on the field coaching the qbs and the receivers, you know this is the guy's gift. He is knowledgeable but more than that he is so engaging and plugged in when he is pointing out the finer points of the game or encouraging one more pass rep, you know there are not many like him, if any. Yes to Mike Riley. Absolutely.

I don’t think there are any slam dunk hires that do not come without any negatives. Hiring MR has its fair share...more than you have already brought up. He also brings LOTS of positives and things to be excited about. Would you agree, or do you only see mainly negatives and pitfalls?

There is a reason that coach after professional/collegiate football coach sent their sons to become better men and student athletes under Coach Riley. His time as the head man at a P5 institution has passed; however, as a one-on-one mentor dedicated to developing OSU QBs (if the rumor is true), I don't think his value can be overstated. Count me in each and every time!

I could not be happier if this comes to pass! MR is a wealth of knowledge, and understands what it takes to win in Corvallis. We all had our issues with his clock management, ect. But at the end of the day, under his leadership, we have had our best years of football. In addition, it takes a man of humility to come back to a school where he was the HC for many, many years and say " I am here to help JS in any way I can!" MR is a great addition to our staff. I believe he and JS will begin to develop QBs again and OSU will have QBS chasing PAC 12 records again. As well as playing on Sundays! GO BEAVS!

Wow!
Semi-hot girl dumps you twice for someone better. You guys would seriously be all in for a third round if she moved back to your town and started sniffing around?
Maybe that's why doormat fans have a doormat team.

Remember that Mike Riley would be coming in as a position coach, not even a coordinator... Many of the concerns (it seems to me anyway) could be valid if he was the Head Coach again. Riley has tons of strengths, as has been pointed out by others. Great coaching ability, recruit talent evaluation, and great knowledge of the game. And if JS is bringing in an old head coach for a lower level position, it is best to have one that will “play well with others”, and not try to “steal his thunder”. Few would do as well in that regard as MR. I agree with those that believe this is great news, if it proves correct!

Let's hope not. We can do better. Mike Riley is not a good football coach. ElBeavoLoco- I respect your opinion but this simply isn't true. This is a great addition if true and Riley is a very respected QB developer & coach. You can argue about Riley being a head coach anymore and I get that. I will support 100% any coach that Coach Smith decides to be part of his staff. I think there are a ton of pro and college teams that would take Riley as their QB coach

If this is legit, I'm kind of looking forward to some top notch internet tantrums today. You know.. people willing to forego season tickets because of the QB coach - which might be the only time that has ever happened.
I'm actually on the fence on this one but warming up to it... On the one hand, I want this to be Smith's show 100%, but on the other hand, if anyone can put an ego aside and work in the background without casting a shadow, it's MR.
