On a new topic, my perception is that it has been a significant length of time (5 or 6 years at least?) since Coach Rueck and the Beavs have recruited and signed a tall (over 6' 5") high school player such as Ruth Hamblin, Marie Gulich, etc.
The last one whose name escapes me at the moment was the wonderful prospect from overseas who was 6' 9". Due to a medical condition she never played a game for the Beavs.
Since then, to the best of my knowledge, no one.
Of course, Raegan Beers filled the bill even though not quite as tall. Also I guess Timea might qualify.
Anyway, does any one have any thoughts on this matter. Also, any information on possible recruits who might "fit".
It seems like non-USA born players would probably be the best bet.
Go Beavs.

Center is covered for next year with Kelsey Rees at 6’5” and Sela Heidi at 6’7”.
I’m more concerned about finding some proven scorers, no matter what position.

Mitrovic, 6'9" starting post, has only been gone for a year. Rueck thought he had 3 posts coming back next year, kinda hard to recruit another one in those circumstances.

My take for where we are going, WCC, big is nice, shorter, solid and fast is better. Exactly like Lucia. 6FT, Solid, Speedy. Tall's, we've always had. My take is we develop our calls instead of bringing them in like, Brown, Jones, Beers, and Gardner, they have game but no stick around.

Rees did not do well at the post position on offense or defense. She had a very hard time defending against the better centers. If we can bring in that Danish girl at 6-4’ or 6-5’, I would make Rees a Forward where her skills fit better.

I believe Andrea Aquino was the player with the heart condition that you were referring to.

Patricia Morris 6'7" Andrea Aquino 6'9" Jelena Mitrovich 6'9" Kenedy Brown 6'6" Sela Heide 6'7" Joanna Grymek 6'8"
Tall isn't what has been working for us in women's basketball. Andrea may have been good, but we'll never know, except she is doing ok in international basketball. And Gulich was only about 6'4" or 6'5". We need more players like Jones, Beers, Gardiner, Corosdale, Gulich, etc... Big bodies with great footwork and/or shooting skills. Except the canadian hammer, we have never had a post over 6'5" or so that ever really produced much. Well, not since Carol Menken-Schaudt.

Thought we had a reputation for developing "Bigs." Pili, 6'2" is a heck of a rebounder, 6+ per game.

I wouldn't really consider Gardiner or Corosdale in this discussion, though. Really a different position. But yes, Beers, Gulich, Jones and even Kennedy Brown (good rebounder and defender, definitely more athletic than the super tall players) have been generally better. Jelena was pretty good, though. Probably roughly equal to Brown. But those super tall posts usually lack leverage/strength inside and are generally not as good rebounders and not quite as effective offensively. The problem is that the top players in the 6-4 to 6-6 range such as Beers and Jones are highly sought after.

Yeah, I agree about Timea and Taya, just throwing out the 4 position post type players that we have had that can stretch the floor and are more in the 6'3"ish range. I also forgot to add Devon Hunter who isn't super tall, but played the post away from the basket a bit. And yes the Beers and Jones type body is what is popular, which is why I think we should be worried about that type of player. Not a 6'6" or taller player, they just don't seem to pan out for us. We probably can't get a top 50 player in the 4 or 5 position right now, but I still believe in Scott to get a top 100 or so player that can fill needs. It's not good right now, but I still believe we can build again now that the dust has settled.

Rees was terrible in the post, on both ends of the floor, this season. Reminded me of Kennedy Brown who, despite being 6'6", was a fish out of water with her back to the basket. Heidi can probably defend in the WCC but is a niche player with her lack of touch. Every time an entry pass was thrown to her this season I winced hoping she could catch it. I expect to see AJ play a lot of the 4 this year including some post work against WCC teams.

Rees was not terrible at the post. She just couldn't handle the slew of talented true bigs that were in the Pac-12 last season. In the WCC? None, so she will do just fine. And my hope is that Rees will stay at the 4 where she can excel.
Heide has barely played in the past 3 seasons before the last. If she can stay healthy and has another off season to get into physical shape as well as relearn how to play I think she will be the dominant post in the conference.

I feel like Heide should be fairly productive against WCC players. Obviously she’ll be limited when guarding post players who can stretch the floor.
Aside from Gonzaga, I don’t see a lot of very productive bigs in the WCC. Kelsey, Sela, and hopefully Mehyar should be a solid rotation inside. Of course more production would be welcomed, but it’s hard to get quality size out of the portal.
The Pac-12 had an insane amount of talent at the post position with Beers, Kyei, Vonleh, Pili, Brink, Iriafen, Betts, and even players like Daniels and Murekatete were really solid.

Really don't appreciate the slamming of Rees. She had some good games for sure, and she can pop 3s - unlike most post players. She and Heide are two very different players and the ability to mix it up will be critical in the upcoming season.
People are free to voice their opinion, but then, slamming players who will obviously be very important to our upcoming season is just bad form.
