No difference, as I already posted several days ago, and yet, another announcer butchered the pronunciation just last night during the game. I'm assuming that's why you brought it up - I too was surprised/annoyed when I heard it. Profs like Harold Dorn in the (now defunct) journalism department would drill into us to not mispronounce the names of people and places, because it will seriously affect your credibility. It sure does! More than one announcer sounded like an idiot on national TV this week (which isn't exactly something new).
To the multiple wayward announcers who failed to do even their light homework this week, I offer the following:
It's ALL-bany, New York
It's ALL-bany, Oregon (not that the announcers last night care, but maybe they drove through it, or at least by it on I-5 on the way to the game)
If you insist on using Al (like the guy's name), there's a little town west of Rochester, which is pronounced Al-bion, New York.

Albany, Oregon is named after Albany, New York, correct? I think I remember the Montieth guy had a financial interest in the Erie Canal. And he was the proponent behind the canal from Lebanon to Albany built for transportation, not for potable water supply.

As much as I respect what your prof was drilling into you, the fact is that people outside the region will never know. Look how many years they slaughtered the pronunciation of Oregon and didn’t care.

I loved the old Henry Weinhard's commercial with the guys in the truck bringing a truckload of beer to Oregon.

Sorry, but it's not the same thing. I hear Ore-GON probably at least twice a month back here, but Joe Blow mispronouncing Oregon is way different than a professional broadcaster - with numerous behind-the-scenes professionals assisting her - repeatedly mispronouncing the name of a well-known eastern city (and state capital, no less) that is only a two-hour drive from where she works. I'm talking about the Sunday night announcer in this case.
She should know better.
