Over the past year or two I've been critical of Rueck's coaching. His record over the past several years has been sliding. But I have to give the utmost credit to him this year. He has his team playing great both mentally and physically. Well done coach keep it up. Go Beavs.

He got a pretty decent assistant coach during the off-season.

Once again Rueck out coached Cori Close. UCLA has the #1 recruit in the country from last year, at 6’ 7”. At the end of the game Rueck guards her with a 6’ 1” frosh guard and makes it work.

I'm pretty sure Betts was the number one recruit the same year as Beers. She didn't get much playing time at Stanford so she transferred to UCLA.

Betts was the #1 ranked incoming frosh last year at Stanford. This year she’s a sophomore just like Raegan. For the high school class of 2022, ESPN had Betts #1 and Rice #2. I think my original point still holds. With Rae out, Betts should have dominated. Granted, she scored 24 points, but with Beers and Heide out and Rees in foul trouble from the second period on it could have been much worse. The execution of Rueck’s zone on Betts by the remaining players (at times Gardiner, Hansford or Paurova) was critical.

Betts was 1, Rice was 2, Jones 22,Iwuala 49,Jaquez 19, Dugalic 24, Osborne 22. Just a ton of highly ranked recruits on that team we just beat.

I've said this before, so perhaps I shouldn't say it again, but Close has had players like this numerous seasons at UCLA and has never been able to win the Pac12. This is her last chance and it's not going to happen again. Close is great at landing great players. She excels at it, but she's never been a good enough coach to get those great players to win the Pac12. As has been mentioned on the board a few times, yes, Scott usually out coaches her. Normally you'll see Oregon State take advantage of UCLA's aggressiveness and their attaching the offensive boards. You'll see a lot of Oregon State beating UCLA back down the floor, and a lot of back door cuts. I didn't really notice that much in this game. The one big noticeable action SR took was the zone defense which helped keep the ball out of Betts hands.

Her teams do tend to under achieve. Sometimes stars go supernova.
