I watched the USC vs UA game and it will be really interesting to see how SR defends against JuJu. She is a phenom for sure. She is much better as a freshman than Sabrina and I thought she was a phenom-to-be.
UA tried various defenses, Box and one and man to man. It was hard to hold her down and UA just got tired and worn down. The Lady Beavs are definitely better than when we played them down there, but USC is improved also. Their guard Padilla is knocking down 3s from 3-4 feet beyond the three line.
I watched the Utah game again last night and Dom played well, but was late getting out and getting a hand up before Utah buried a three. We will have to be better against USC.
When OSU has beat UCLA, Cori Close is class and is very complimentary and says Scott is a great coach.
Lindsay Gottlieb once said when she was at Cal to the effect " No disrespect intended here, but we should be beating OSU." The current Cal coach has said the same thing after we beat them down there. Do you remember the anguish on Lindsay's face after the Lady Beavs beat them in the Tournament last year? I think she is a mediocre coach and SR has dominated her teams over the years even though she had better recruiting classes. She has the #1 class coming in next year ..... all due to USC money not her coaching prowess. There is a form of elitist snobbery directed from the bigger schools toward smaller Land Grant Schools. Makes beating them all the better.
Go Beavs

Just FYI, along the topic of respect - you won’t see “Lady Beavs” used much round here, just like we don’t say “Gentlemen Beavs” on the MBB board. It serves no purpose. On this board it’s understood we’re discussing WBB. Just Beavs. As in, GO BEAVS!

WereBeaver, I respect your opinion on calling the Beaver Women's bball team the "Lady Beavs", however, I disagree with you. Additionally, I think it has nothing at all to do with respect. I have been using "Lady Beavs" in referring to them for several years now and I actually, personally, find it to be a cool name for them, similar to how the Tennessee Volunteers call their women's team the Lady Vols. I respect that you may not share in that opinion, but, I think it's plenty fine to allow those of us that DO like that name to use it. Peace brother! Go Beavs!

I’d bet you dollars to doughnuts that the TEAM does not prefer to be called the “Lady” Beavers. I challenge you to find one such reference in any of the team’s public site or social media postings in the Rueck era. That is, if you care about what they think. BTW. 3/18/2018. OSU Beavers 66. Tennessee Lady Vols 59.

USC HAS A SOLID ATHLETIC TEAM. THIS SERIES DETERMINES ALOT I THINK IT WOULD BE GOOD TO WIN OUT BUT WE MUST AT LEAST SPLIT. THESE TWO TEAMS CAN WIN ON ANY GIVEN GAME BUT CAN ALSO LOSE ON ANY GIVEN GAME. WE MUST STAY STRONG MENTALLY. WE PLAYED BOTH THESE TEAMS AND WE ARE IMPROVED ALOT SINCE THEN. MATCHES WILL BE IMPORTANT AGAINST BOTH TEAMS. IN PARTICULAR USC IS NOT USED TO PERFORMING WITHOUT THEIR BALL HOG. STOP OR SLOW HER DOWN WE WIN HANDS DOWN. JUJU WANTS TO TAKE OVER ASPECTS OF THE GAME. I SAY WE ZONE THEM AND FORCE THEM TO STAY OUTSIDE. DONT LET JUJU GET PENATRATION. UCLA MATCH UP FEATURES TWO OLD RIVALS WITH BETTS AND BEERS. THAT WILL BE A KEY MATCHUP.

Even though there is not a single instance on record ANYWHERE of the team or any individual players calling themselves that (only a couple of anonymous old men on a message board). Got it. BTW, to get back on track with the topic. It will certainly be a challenge to keep an exceptional talent like Juju Watkins under control and hold her under her scoring average.

So...in order for someone to coin or use a nickname for a team, a person, or anything, there has to be a reference to said nickname on record some were? Just making sure I'm following your line of thinking here. Or, do you just not like that nickname so you don't want anyone else to use it?

Wow Werebeaver,
I thought we were supposed to be respectful on Benny's House. Your comment (only a couple of anonymous old men on a message board) does not reflect well on you.
Calling someone a Lady is a sign of respect and a compliment. By the way, I noticed our future adversary's bulletin board calls itself the home of the "Lady Zags." The LA Times and the LA Daily News still refer to the Bruins as the "Lady Bruins."
So Werebeaver if your an Administrator as well as a nasty fellow, you can kick me off Benny's House for complementing the Women's BB Team.

Certainly "Lady Beavs" is 100% full of respect. Personally, to me, though, they are the "Oregon State basketball team". The other team is the mens program.

Ive always considered it a basic sign of respect to call someone by the name they use. Not by one I decide to make up for them (unless I’m their parent). I guess I’m old-school that way.

This is an interesting conversation which reflects an issue that is still alive in many universities. I thought I recalled an earlier conversation about this on this site which concluded that the name depends on the official designation by the University. At Oregon State the women's teams are simply the Beavers, exactly the same as the men's teams. What individual fans choose to call them is another question, and mostly what this thread is about. But the official name of the women's basketball team--and every other team in women's sports--is the Beavers. I did some digging on this and there are several teams that use a different name from the men's teams. Those that include "Lady" are mostly in the south. I could find only one west coast team that uses an alternate name--USC, which sometimes calls its women's teams Women of Troy. Here's a link to an interesting list of these teams. en.everybodywiki.com/List_of_college_sports_teams_in_the_United_States_with_different_nicknames_for_men%27s_and_women%27s_teams#Schools_that_use_the_prefix_%22Lady%22Also, the matter has been quite controversial at Tennessee. The school abolished Lady Vols in 2014 for its women's teams, but restored the name in 2017 after quite a bit of turmoil over the change. Here's an article about that. www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/20704564/tennessee-brings-back-lady-volunteers-nameYou will be relieved to know that the women's teams at the University of South Carolina are simply the Gamecocks, not the Lady Cocks.

Defending Juju will be a challenge. She’s a scoring machine. She dropped 28 on us the first time. Rest of their team scored 28 together between 4 players.
