The game was set to be played between Cal's trip to Tallahassee and Cal hosting Miami.
Instead, Cal set up the perfect schedule:
UC Davis @ Auburn San Diego State @ Florida State Bye Miami @ Pittsburgh NC State Oregon State Bye @ Wake Forest Syracuse Stanford @ SMU
Four weeks (two at home), bye, four weeks (three at home), bye, and four weeks (two at home).
Hopefully, Oregon State does something similar, just with the three at home to start off the first four games, then a bye, then three against Mountain West teams (hopefully including Colorado State and the road trip to Colorado Springs), the game at Berkeley, then a home-and-home with Mountain West teams (hopefully containing the road trip to Reno), the Clashcadia with Wazzu, and finish, hopefully, with the game at Boise.
That would just about be a perfect schedule.
Here is a random number generated schedule based on the foregoing, just in case the Mountain West & Oregon State want to cut & paste:
Aug. 31 Idaho State Sep. 7 @ San Diego State Sep. 14 Oregon Sep. 21 Purdue Sep. 28 Bye Oct. 5 San Jose State Oct. 12 @ Air Force Oct. 19 Colorado State Oct. 26 @ Cal Nov. 2 Bye Nov. 9 @ Nevada Nov. 16 UNLV Nov. 23 Wazzu Nov. 30 @ Boise

Would be perfectly happy to make that a recurring thing, I think they are our best antagonist.

Boise school of trucking is never going to be able to get that visceral kind of reaction from me.

We are never going to play Oregon on Rivalry Weekend again. I'm not saying that Boise is our biggest rival, we are going to continue to play Oregon but it's going to be in the pre-season. I won't go so far as to say that it will be meaningless but it will never be what the Civil War was.

I still hope that this is going to be a 5-6 year thing like it was 60 years ago, but, unless something changes in the interim, the Civil War probably does not get played on Rivalry Weekend for those 5-6 years. Oregon State needs to seize on the opportunities against California, Oregon, and Purdue and put together some huge statement wins. The Beavs can beat the Ducks with their new quarterback and then follow it up with a second straight victory over a Big Ten team in Purdue. If Oregon State picks up both wins and takes care of business against the 3-4 Mountain West teams into that end of October game in Berkeley, that Berkeley game could be huge.

No sound, but here are five different angles of huge scumbag, Winston Venable, cheap-shotting James Rodgers out of the game against Boise in 2010: I think that it will take time to hate Boise as much as Oregon, but the Donkeys occasionally will give you a very visceral reason to hate on them. Outside of the departing 10, I dislike no football team more than Boise.

I respect Cal for being in a bad spot and wanting to stay with Stanford but still agreeing to play Oregon State. The Bears, to me, are probably the best of the 10. Hopefully, Oregon State continues to play Cal in most sports.

I understand the feeling, but I worry that soon we will see the effect that even more money will have on the Ducks program. I don’t like it but I know I have to face the very likely probability that the overall divergence in talent will be increasingly difficult to overcome on the field. That’s why I personally don’t think we should play them at all, unless it’s in a major bowl game.

The Beavs have done more with less for decades at this point. I don't know why Oregon State cannot continue to do more with less. The issue with not play Oregon continues to be that, if Oregon State does not play Oregon, the Beavs would have even less to work with. If we don't play Oregon, because they have more money than Oregon State, we probably would not have played Oregon at any point in the past half century. Also, if we don't play Oregon, because they have more money than Oregon State, we might as well trade out our orange and black for a beautiful Oregon yellow.

Not sure how you interpreted that I want the Beavs to lose, not even close. In fact that’s my point, that I don’t want them to lose, and I feel that the growing money disparity coupled with the no rules NIL will not be good for us, and will favor them. Rah rah sis boom bah, but let’s be honest. Wait, this is a message board.

Rah rah sis boom bah, but let’s be honest. Wait, this is a message board. Since World War I ended, Oregon State is 10-64-4 (.154) all-time against USC. Don't play 'em, because the Trojans spend a ton of money on football and Oregon State does not? I disagree. You play the best. You beat the best, or you go out in a blaze of glory. You don't duck "better" teams. That's a Duck way of thinking. You play Cal home-and-home. You play Oregon home-and-home. It might be a one time out of eight win, but you play out the seven, so you get that eighth win. Ducking Oregon (while Wazzu keeps the Apple Cup alive) guarantees that Oregon State is a second-tier team (at best) and that Oregon State never gets an invite to a Power Three conference.
