I think he is in serious consideration if Sweeney or Kiffin do not want to move. Only deterrent is the buyout.

The buyout is north of $20M, maybe a lot more. That could be a factor, if not a deal killer. Funniest thing I saw this morning: duck fans equating the Alabama job to the Oregon job as a 'lateral move'. I also think Lanning's silence with all the rumors put the ducks thru a horrible night, especially after they've been recently traumatized by Taggart and Crisco leaving. Just another reason why duck nation is so fragile and insecure. Well deserved Karma from all the disproportionate spending and cheating over the last 20 years.

Yes, but I'm hearing it's a lot more than $20M.

Lanning was just quoted in the Oregonian that he isn't leaving. It was fun while it lasted.

There is a clause in Lanning’s contract that calls for 30M worth of Nike stock if he completes contract. Buyout would have to be 20M (standard buyout fee) plus something commiserate of that Nike stock. A&M apparently did their due diligence after Jimbo crapped the bed and determined the buyout for Lanning is too high

Maybe it is a lateral move for a coach, all things considered. Lanning has all the resources he needs, and more. How do you follow up Saban?

My thought on Lanning is he is not a stupid guy. Furthermore, who in their right mind would take that job unless you are an Alabama man or it is several steps up the ladder from your current job. For instance I could see a 45-year-old coordinator or a Sun Belt coach taking that job. I don't see any coach that has a roughly top 30 position at his current school wanting that hornet's nest. It's like a relatively unknown singer being asked to perform after Adele.

Lanning appear to have A. not been in Alabama when it was said he was and B. publicly stated he is not leaving saying "History has shown Oregon is a good place to be, and maybe not a good place to leave"
I think nothing currently boils my blood more than the current Duck coach having the integrity we wanted our hometown hero alumni coach to have. As much as I have been on the "lets just move on" train, it is juxtaposing the two immediate programs that really reinforces Smith created a wound that is never going to heal.
Smith legitimately can probably never show his face in Oregon again. Might even be dangerous for MSU to have a road game to Autzen...

He just said he would never leave Eugene, so that would make him out a liar if he took the job. Also, I'm sure Phil Knight threw an incredible amount of money at him to make sure he wouldn't listen to Alabama. I also think Saban and Greg Byrne are way to smart not to have a plan already in place. Maybe they're letting the expected media frenzy do its thing, then they'll announce the new coach who already has a contract signed in advance.

You're still traumatized by what Willie Taggart and Crisco did to you. Time to let it go and try to heal.
