Man, addiction is no f'in joke.
Listen, I like a good cheap shot as much as the next guy - especially against a *uck. But this poor clod is just too pathetic to kick while he's down. He had it all there to make a success out of his life and tossed it away multiple times because he'd rather just get high and stay high.
I really do hope he can get his life together - but I wouldn't bet a nickel on it.

That is very sad. Kid could have had the world by the tail. Hope he gets cleaned up, and can do something useful with his life. First and foremost...he has GOT to admit his addiction(s), and get serious, competent help.

I don't know if it's a matter of intelligence. The vast majority of people, of all IQ's never get involved in self-destructive substance abuse. And addiction certainly exists among the high IQ occupations all the way up to physicists, neurosurgeons and mathematicians. A friend of mine from HS became a respected and successful neurosurgeon but died due to opioid addiction - he had access to a nearly unlimited supply. Smart guy but his smarts didn't save him.
Addiction is hard to beat but not impossible. The odds are highly against getting clean and staying clean. You're right about that.
But once you're in it, it's not something you can necessarily "think your way out of". It's not a "rational" process.
I know none of this will be convincing to you - I'm not trying to persuade you. Just trying to inject some compassion and empathy into the equation for anyone else who may read this thread.
